Spoilers for 'Defending Jacob' Episode 8 'After'

Fans who religiously caught up with 'Defending Jacob' just have one message by the end of the show — "Give Chris Evans and the show an Emmy." The final episode sees Andy Barber (Chris Evans) and the family enjoying a quiet vacation in the Caribbean. Just when things seem to slowly limp to normal, the family is crushed with another blow in the form of another murder. This time, the victim is Hope Connors (Jessi Case) who befriends Jacob Barber (Jaeden Martell) during the vacation.

This puts Jacob back on the radar as it is revealed Jacob was one of the last people to see Hope. By this time, Laurie Barber (Michelle Dockery) is fully convinced that Jacob was indeed the murderer in the Ben Rifkin case. Adding to this was Andy's confession to her about how Leonard Patz was actually killed and his suicide was framed. While Jacob is eventually letting go, the entire turn of events causes a rift in the family, especially between Andy and Laurie. Deciding to take matters into her own hands, Laurie takes Jacob out in her car and on the way, while heavy rain pounds the windshield, asks Jacob if he killed Ben one last time and dangerously accelerates the car. Jacob pleads but Laurie decides to kill him and swerves off the road, crashing the car against a wall. The scene shifts to the present where Andy is trying to convince the jury and a relentless Neal Logiudice (Pablo Schreiber) and the case eventually ends in indictment.

Going by the book, Laurie survives while Jacob dies, but in a turn of events, both mother and son are shown to be alive by the end of the series. This may have baffled some fans, but some fans agreed that this was enough to earn the actor and the show an Emmy or two. "The last episode of #DefendingJacob just wow. I can’t even begin to process it. Just give Chris Evans all the awards..." a fan tweeted. "So many mixed feelings about this last episode. They choose different endings than the book. I wonder if there’s gonna be a season 2  @ChrisEvans really deserves an Emmy nomination for this @AppleTV #DefendingJacob," a fan asked. "And finished. Won’t give any spoilers, but both @ChrisEvans and #MichelleDockery deserve awards for their performances. Brilliant tv! #DefendingJacob," a tweet read.

"Give these three actors Emmys, pls and thx," a fan said. "Wow. #DefendingJacob. This series and the actors better get some awards. If they don’t, then I know it’s rigged for sure.@ChrisEvans @AppleTV," a fan explained. "#DefendingJacob no words. Head f***ing empty. Just give their awards please thank you @TheEmmys," a fan opined. "I’m really shocked about the #DefendingJacob ending, but, at the same time, disappointed. Chris Evans was pure and gold on the entire series, he deserves Golden Globe & Emmy nominations," a fan wrote. This one's much simpler and crisp: "This show deserves an Emmy #DefendingJacob."

'Defending Jacob' is available for streaming on AppleTV+.
