The first episode of 'Deadwater Fell' introduced us to the friends and family of Kate Kendrick as well as to her shocking death.

Kate (Anna Madeley) becomes the prime suspect in the deaths of her three daughters and attempt to murder of her husband by starting a fire in her house. The police have no motive except for the fact that Kate suffered from depression and postpartum stress and was medically treated for the same. A car accident caused by her carelessness, while she had her kids and her best friend Jess Milner (Cush Jumbo) onboard, becomes another reason for Kate being suspected as well.

The only survivor of the fire is Kate's husband Tom Kendrick (David Tennant), and the relationship between the two is beyond terrible. Towards the end of the episode, it is also revealed that Jess, who is with Tom's best friend Steve (Matthew McNulty) -- the police sergeant, had an affair with Tom, and with this we also see a hint in the episode that alludes to Kate having known about her husband's affair with her best friend as well.

One of the things that the first episode only hinted at is the fact that Kate knew about her husband cheating on her. Just before she crashed the car, when Jess mentions how Tom is crazy about her, she makes a sarcastic comment. It was as if she knew about Tom and Jess and yet never confronted them. It was as if she knew the confrontation would get her nowhere, and her postpartum depression would only add to her mental state being questioned by everyone around.

The second episode will further explore how this will influence Tom, now that his wife and kids have died in a fire accident with him being the sole survivor. Will his affair be the motive that answers all the questions that everyone, including Tom and the police officials, have? Kate is right now the prime suspect in everyone's eyes and that includes her closest friends as well. But is she really the reason behind her family's misfortune? That is the question that the upcoming episodes will address.

What is also interesting is the lock on the kids' bedroom. The one that stopped Steve from getting to the girls when he entered the house the night of the fire to rescue his friend's family. Did Kate really lock her kids up before starting the fire? If she did, how does that explain the pine needles? One of the things found in the autopsy of Kate and her three daughters were pine needles in one of the girls' foot. She must have stepped out of the house and gone into the woods without her footwear on, indicating  a state of panic.

This further goes on to show how the crime was premeditated and the perpetrator had no intentions of letting the kids escape. With so much evidence pointing towards Kate, and very few questions whose answers might lead to prove Kate's innocence, 'Deadwater Fell' is a mystery that is worth waiting for.

New episodes of 'Deadwater Fell' will air on Mondays on Acorn TV.
