Spoilers for 'Deadliest Catch' Season 16 Episode 8 'Mayday: Scandies Rose'
One of the major highlights of 'Mayday: Scandies Rose' was the heavy featuring of the tragedy that befell the fishing vessel on December 31, 2019. The episode captures the emotions of the skippers and the crew who knew captain Gary Cobban Jr. of the Scandies Rose. The most affected by the devastating piece of news was Monte Colburn, the skipper of the Wizard. He resorted to excess drinking and that led to the team delaying the start of their opilio crabbing season by a day.
Viewers, however, were quite understanding as they provided words of solace and encouragement to the skipper. "Come on, Monty. Get it together, man. Honor the loss of your friend by having a successful season. #DeadliestCatch," a fan wrote. One fan hoped he would rebound quickly: "Man, never thought I'd see Montie in that kind of shape before going fishing. We've all been there, he WILL rebound! @crabwizard
#DeadliestCatch@DeadliestCatch"
"Seeing Monty like this on @DeadliestCatch is killing me #scandiesrose #deadliestcatch," a fan opined. "Monte is breaking my heart. That’s raw emotions right there.," another seconded. "How has no one noticed Monte getting hammered? This is way too dangerous! TV show or not the camera operator should have raised the alarm! #DeadliestCatch," a fan asked. "This just shows how much of brotherhood this fishery is, despite any tensions and hostilities that may brew. #DeadliestCatch," a tweet read.
Most fans expressed shock first. "Oh, man guys go up there and help Monte he's falling apart right now. This is making me so and really scared....... oh my God you're still tied up. #DeadliestCatch," a fan exclaimed. "Watching these rough and tough manly men get emotional just absolutely hurts my heart. I can't imagine how helpless and probably scared they are. It's a tough reality that if could happen to any of them any time. #DeadliestCatch," another tweeted.
The Scandies Rose tragedy too garnered sympathy as fans shared their thoughts on the rough lives led by these fishermen. "It’s never good to hear that Mayday transmission! This may be a TV show to us viewers but it’s life and death for those on the Bering Sea #DeadliestCatch," a tweet read. "This is just a cruel reminder that the Bering Sea knows no favoritism. She is a cold, callous mistress who can take you at any time. And she doesn't like to give up her dead. #DeadliestCatch," another said.
'Deadliest Catch' Season 16 airs Tuesdays 8 pm ET on Discovery.
