'Tone-deaf' Chrissy Teigen hosts Squid Game-themed party, slammed for missing the point

Chrissy Teigen has found herself embroiled in controversy after she hosted a ‘Squid Game’-themed party at her house. The 35-year-old along with her husband John Legend celebrated the weekend with some of their friends in an unusual way. They threw the party based on the hit Netflix series, and which critics called “tone deaf” as the show is a trenchant critique of capitalism.

‘Squid Game’ is a South Korean survival drama that revolves around people in debt playing childhood games with deadly consequences, only to get a whopping cash prize. But Teigen’s party did not require anyone’s death and it was lighthearted with games like dunk tank, musical chairs, and hide and seek.

Party planners Wife of the Party reportedly planned the whole thing. They transformed Teigen and Legend’s California pad into the show’s set by including a maze staircase, bunk beds, and large piggy banks filled with money. The model took to Instagram to share pictures from the event that showed her dressed up as the devilish "red light, green light" doll while her husband donned a golden animal mask and robe to look like a VIP guest from the show.

Teigen captioned the post, “Where do I even begin!! what an absolutely epic night. my dream came true of watching my friends fight to the death! dunk tank, musical chairs, hide and seek followed by a very riveting final game of pin the tail on the donkey. @wifeoftheparty you truly are the best and have THE BEST team ever. Thank you thank you thank you!! More pics to come!!”

Wife of the Party also shared some pictures and a clip from the party. One of the posts’ captions read, “@chrissyteigen I’m so thankful for the opportunity but more importantly the kindness you showed my team as we basically took over your house for two days straight. I don’t know if we can ever top this one. Thank you @kstuddd for loving me.”

But several people on the internet were not happy with Teigen’s style of throwing the party. A user commented below her post, “This is so beyond tone deaf as a millionaire to invite your rich friends over and reenact squid games which is rooted in the violence of capitalism.” The second one said, “I...think you missed the point of the show.” “Complete lack of self awareness,” the third one added.

A person noted, “Rich people dressing up as characters from Squid Game… way to miss the point of the show. Super tone deaf.” Another one mentioned, “This is amazing and also the most nonsense rich person shit I've ever seen.” “Rich people playing squid games. Lol ok,” a comment read.

A user tweeted, “I wish to be as ignorant as Chrissy Teigen hosting a Squid Game party with her rich LA friends.” Another one not just targeted Teigen, but Alec Baldwin also by writing, “#ChrissyTeigen #SquidGame It would have been perfect if "always ready for gun-play" #AlecBaldwin was there. He could have aimed a gun he was handed at someone and killed them without fault. So SICK the Legend's children should be taken away.”

“Every time there's a piece of media critiquing capitalism you can bet Chrissy Teigen is gonna be there to miss the point and ruin it,” a tweet added.
