The bad news is that we have to wait a bit longer, the good news is that we get the new season this year itself

One Chicago fans may have been disappointed that all three 'Chicago' shows ended their 2019-2020 seasons early due to the shutdown of production as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing lockdown. This meant that all three 'Chicago' shows ended their seasons short of three episodes each and while finales are much more dramatic on 'Chicago Med' and 'Chicago Fire', the unplanned finale for Season 7 of 'Chicago PD' served quite well.

Thankfully, before the shutdown, we had gotten the news that all three shows were renewed for a whopping three seasons each, which meant that we knew the shows would come back, the only uncertainty was as to when. NBC recently announced the return dates for all three shows — the bad news is that we have to wait a bit longer, the good news is that we get the new seasons this year itself.

Read on to know more about the upcoming season of 'Chicago PD'.

Release date

'Chicago PD' Season 8 will premiere on Wednesday, November 11. Going by the previous schedules, 'Chicago PD' will continue to air at 10/9c.

Plot

Season 7 ended with Kevin Atwater at the front and center and we hope that trend continues into Season 8. When Atwater was partnered up with a cop who had racist tendencies for the second time, he found himself in a messy situation. The cop — who died — had pursued someone just because he was Black, but in the process got shot and died from the wounds.

With Internal Affairs conducting an investigation, Atwater is pressured to cover up for the cop, who comes from a family of cops. Atwater instead chooses to tell the truth and when he returns home that evening, he finds a group of cars waiting for him, flashing their lights to signal that he will be the target of their intimidation tactics for what he chose to do.

The previous season had some really tough moments for some of our favorite characters. We all remember Kim Burgess's miscarriage episode, which came after Burgess had doubts about putting her family above her career. Meanwhile, her relationship with Adam Ruzek seems to have evolved into a comfortable friendship and we wonder whether "Burzek" will ever come about again.

The relationship a lot of fans were waiting for was the one between Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton. Upton had a bit of a dark path herself, turning more into Hank Voight's protege than anyone else. Meanwhile, we expected Halstead to be playing more of a frenemy role to the head of the Investigations Unit. Unfortunately, the latter did not play out. However, if Halstead and Upton do find their relationship becoming more than a friendship, we hope to see their different approach to Voight's tactics become front and center of their dynamics.
