'Chicago PD' Season 8 Episode 3 Spoilers: A multiple-homicide case and finally a jumpstart for Upstead
Many viewers were disappointed when 'Chicago PD' and the other shows from the 'Chicago' franchise on NBC went on winter break just after two episodes of the delayed new seasons aired. Thankfully, all three shows return this week and the Intelligence Unit has a very serious and upsetting case to handle that involves multiple homicides, and one little girl as the sole witness.
What happened previously?
The focus of the past few episodes of 'Chicago PD' had been Officer Kevin Atwater, whose storyline continued from Season 7 to Season 8, where he was being harassed by other cops for choosing to reveal that a cop who died in crossfire had shot first and was racially profiling the shooter involved. That cop's family and friends — in the police — all began to intimidate Atwater, bugging his house, and more.
Eventually, Atwater was given the choice to retract what he said — which would mean that he would never be a detective — or quit being in the police completely. Atwater, instead, turned the tables and said that he would rather quit. But if he did so, then Atwater would make sure that his harassment was made public news and that everyone involved would be dragged by the media. At the end of the episode, it becomes clear that Atwater will remain a cop, and he will continue doing the job upholding his values.
We are taking a look at the relationship between the detectives, Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), who have been partners since Erin Lindsey (Sophia Bush) left. Halstead and Upton's professional and personal connections have been growing, to the point that Upton even admitted that she had feelings for him. Halstead, while showing clear signs of having feelings for Upton, has not voiced his own thoughts yet.
What to expect in Episode 3?
The official synopsis for Season 8 Episode 3 titled 'Tender Age' says, "When a child is found is walking alone in the middle of the street, the team later discovers that her entire family has been murdered and that she narrowly escaped. The investigation leads to a complicated family story that hits home for the members of the Chicago PD."
We cannot help but think that the team members who will be most affected will be Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), who had previously been in an on-and-off relationship and were going to expect a child together, but lost the unborn child when Burgess was viciously attacked by a criminal. Burgess's trauma was hard to watch and we think that this might come back as she helps find the criminal.
Meanwhile, the promo for this episode had shown that Upton will be asked by the FBI to head up a task force, potentially in New York. This may bring flashbacks for Halstead, whose last beau left under the same circumstances. This time, however, will Halstead speak up and ask Upton to stay and confess his feelings to her? That remains to be seen but we are sure this is the jumpstart that the Upstead relationship needs.
'Chicago PD' returns to NBC with new episodes this Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at 10/9c.
