'Chicago Fire' Season 9 Episode 3 Spoilers: Will Brett and Casey finally overcome their Gabby Dawson problem?
The first week of 2021 sees the return of the OG 'Chicago' show, 'Chicago Fire', from which both 'Chicago PD' and 'Chicago Med' were spun off. 'Chicago Fire' is now in its ninth season, having premiered in the fall season of 2012 and has built a strong fanbase who are no doubt waiting for new episodes.
Over the past couple of seasons of the show, 'Chicago Fire' has lost a few key characters, and brought in some new members — yet, this changing dynamic does not take away from the show. Let's take a look at the relevant plotlines that have happened so far and what's in store for the first episode of 'Chicago Fire' in the new year.
What happened previously?
The most anticipated part of the new episode of 'Chicago Fire' might be whether Captain Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) can get over a little obstacle and finally give "Brettsey" fans the endgame they have been waiting for two years.
Of course, Casey's big love on the show was Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund), with whom he had been linked since the first season. The pair dated and then eventually married, and even temporarily fostered a child whom they were hoping to adopt. By the end of Season 7, however, following Gabby's decision to move to Puerto Rico — which Casey was against — the pair split up and got divorced.
However, Gabby came back for one episode in the previous season, and while Casey and Gabby ended up spending the night together, the two went their separate ways again. Now, Brett and Gabby were pretty close when Gabby when she was in Chicago, and they were even considered to be best friends. So that could be why Casey and Brett have been so awkward with each other since Season 7.
Yes, they have been close, comforting each other after Gabby left, and both were aware of their growing feelings for the other person, but they never acted on it. Until the winter finale for Season 9, when Brett was in danger and Casey was very concerned for her.
By the end of the episode, they could not deny their feelings and they kissed. But Brett had one question for Casey before she moved further -- was he still in love with Gabby? Who would Casey choose if Gabby were to come back that instant?
In the first two episodes of Season 9, firefighter Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) was told by Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) to take the exam to become a lieutenant after the success of her Girls on Fire program. Her boyfriend, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), a lieutenant himself, is all for it.
What to expect in Episode 3?
Casey's mixed answers and reluctance to say a name in response to Brett's question was enough for Brett to put an end to things. However, Casey does not see it like this and wants to keep seeing where his relationship with Brett might go. In the promo for the upcoming episode, we see Casey telling Brett that his feelings for her are real, "regardless of Gabby." But Brett responds, "There is no regardless of Gabby, that's the point."
It remains to be seen where the "Brettsey" couple will go after this, but we hope the matter is put to rest after this episode, whether they end up together or not.
The synopsis for Season 9 Episode 3 of 'Chicago Fire' states, "A mishap on the aerial ladder in the midst of a fire rescue leaves Mouch shaken and questioning his abilities. Kidd looks for support from Severide while Casey and Brett discuss their future."
'Chicago Fire' returns to NBC for new episodes this Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at 9/8c.
