Candace Owens makes 'murky' claim about Volodymyr Zelenskyy's wife Olena in Paris shopping spree
WASHINGTON, DC: Controversial Republican commentator Candace Owens has been fact-checked by the internet after she pushed an unfounded claim about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's wife, Olena Zelenska.
The Ukrainian president arrived in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, December 21, marking his first visit overseas since Russia's invasion. Before his arrival, Zelensky shared on Twitter, “On my way to the US to strengthen resilience and defense capabilities of 🇺🇦. In particular, @POTUS and I will discuss cooperation between 🇺🇦 and 🇺🇸. I will also have a speech at the Congress and a number of bilateral meetings.”

However, it seems Owens was not thrilled at Zelenskyy’s official visit. The republican commentator expressed her fury by retweeting his message and sending a strong warning to Zelenskyy and his wife. "We want nothing to do with you. Stop stealing from our people while your wife drops tens of thousands of dollars shopping in Paris. Despicable." Owens wrote.

Owens' claim soon invited immense social media attention. The internet fact-checked her and it was revealed there was no evidence the Ukrainian First Lady went on a shopping spree during her "diplomatic trip to Paris.” Twitterati also held up a fact-check article by Newsweek that stated the “claims’ provenance appears to be extremely murky and lacking in credibility.”
Owens’ attacks on Zelenskyy didn’t stop there. She took a dig at the Ukrainian president by simply responding "I just want to punch him" to a video of him with President Biden in the Oval Office. Owens’ response sparked debate on Twitter as one said, “How to people not see that this is the weirdest war ever. An actor literally flew to Ukraine and gave another actor an oscar 😂😂😂” "Candace: same here,” another said while a third added, “He's not the problem....the enemy is within...” “Biden and Congress thanking him for protecting their secrets and bank accounts,” a fourth asserted.

However, Owens is not the only one who was irked by Zelenskyy’s arrival. During his visit, Zelenskyy addressed a joint meeting of congress in Washington, where he told politicians US aid is an "investment." His request apparently left most republicans furious, with Donald Trump Jr calling him "an ungrateful international welfare queen.” Newsweek reports.
