K-pop band BTS raises a toast to The Beatles on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'
The Beatles made their TV debut on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' on February 9, 1964.
"And now, on the same stage 50 years later, plus 5 years, 3 months, 6 days, a new batch of mop-topped heartthrobs has landed," Stephen Colbert said taking on the persona of Ed Sullivan in introducing the hit K-POP band BTS on his talk show 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert'. Along with Colbert, BTS threw it all the way back to 1964 and channeled 'The Beatles' and performed their new song 'Boy With Luv', which they recorded with Halsey on May 15. Colbert records his show at the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan, so it was extra fitting.
In the cold, opening video Colbert introduced the group saying,"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we've got a big, big show and it continues. You may have heard there's a new musical craze sweeping the globe. These fellas are really something, and people are so excited, you can only call it BTS-mania." The talk show host continued, "These boys aren't from America. No, they're from across the pond—the big one. The one with Hawaii in the middle. They're really a fine group of youngsters. You can call them the Fab 7. It's got a nice ring to it." With a reference to the "Fab 4" and the black and white video, the show was a time machine, fans included!
BTS introduced themselves, which went on a little something like this: "How you doing? I'm RM. I'm a nice boy.", "Hi guys, I'm Suga", "Hi, my name is V and I'm a good boy", "Hi! I'm your hope, you're my hope, I'm J-Hope!", "Hi, I'm Jimin. Nice to meet you guys", "Hi, I'm worldwide handsome Jin! You know?" as he blew a kiss to the audience, "Hi, I'm Jungkook thank you very much for inviting us." or as Colbert called them "The cute one, the cute one, the cute one, the cute one, the cute one, the cute one and, uh, the cute one." BTS also joined host Colbert for an interview.
On April 12, they dropped their highly-anticipated album 'Map of the Soul: Persona' and one day later performed on 'Saturday Night Live'. Halsey and BTS performed the song during the 2019 Billboard Music Awards and it brought the entire MGM Grand Garden Arena to its feet. BTS has been winning hearts across the globe and everyone is pledging their loyalty to the BTS Army. Terry Crews has likened BTS to The Beatles, Julianne Hough met the band on the red carpet before the BBMA's and she tried getting a picture, while Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas even said their "main goal is to meet BTS".
The Beatles comparison comes after BTS swept the pop world, becoming one of the biggest acts on the planet since forming in 2013. They recently equaled a Beatles record after having three number one albums in the US in 11 months – an achievement last completed by the 'Fab Four'. Earlier this year, BTS became the first group from their country to score a UK number one album. Mapping their trail from 'The Beatles' to where they have reached now, the 'Fab 7' sure seem to be on the right path!
