'Cinderella': Release date, plot, cast and all you need to know about Disney+ 'Celebrate Black Stories' edition of 1997 film

On the ‘Celebrate Black Stories’ series on Disney+, the newest edition is 1997’s ‘Cinderella’ featuring Whitney Houston, Brandy as the fierce Cinderella, Whoopi Goldberg and more. ‘Cinderella’ will be re-releasing in Disney+ on February 12. Here are all the updates you need to know about the movie.

So far the ‘Celebrate Black Stories’ series include ‘Soul’, ‘Black Is King’, ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Hidden Figures’. Now the latest addition of Brandy’s 'Cinderella' is significant as fans have been anticipating this moment for a decade now. Along with the announcement of the film releasing on Disney+, Grammy Award winner Brandy Rayana Norwood got together with Whoopi Goldberg on ABC’s ‘The View’ to talk about what it means for the film and audience.

Goldberg quipped, “It’s pretty remarkable that people have been begging for ‘Cinderella’ to be re-released for almost 24 years. I mean, what do you think, is it possible?” Brandy chimed in saying, “It’s definitely possible. I appreciate the fans,” and added,  “I’m so excited that Cinderella has a home now at Disney plus and we can celebrate, share and inspire a whole new generation.”

‘Cinderella’ will be releasing on February 12 at 12 am on Disney+.



 

Plot

1997’s ‘Cinderella’ was a movement by itself by reviving the fairytale with a diverse cast and a storyline to inspire the generation. The musical featured critically acclaimed singer and actress Brandy who is deemed as the first Black woman in history to play Cinderella. Brandy as Cinderella doesn’t back down at her stepmother’s taunts and rather goes more resilient to achieve her dreams.

Most famous by her mononym Brandy, the 41-year-old singer, songwriter, record producer, actress and businesswoman, Brandy Rayana Norwood has been phenomenal since her debut album in 1993 which sold six million copies worldwide. Along with her acclaim for music, Brandy has also acted in Broadway musicals and sitcoms like ‘Zoe Ever After’ and more.

Creator

‘Cinderella’, the 1997 American musical fantasy television film, was produced by Walt Disney Television and directed by Robert Iscove. The screenplay was written by Robert L. Freedman. Based on the classic French fairy tale penned by Charles Perrault, ‘Cinderella’ was reportedly the second remake and third rendition of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, which was originally broadcast on television in 1957.

The wait of almost two decades is over as the film will finally see the light of television again with Disney Plus. A user wrote, “I am SO excited! When I was younger I watched this movie over and over and over!! @WhoopiGoldberg. Can't wait to watch with my daughter!” Another excited user wrote, “YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS THIS IS THE BEST LIVE ACTION CINDERELLA. I was gonna say best live action film but I can't even lie, Flinstones made my heart flip as a kid!”
