76ers vs Celtics: Did Philadelphia's Brett Brown effectively coach the last game of his career?

Ahead of the season, there were talks about how Brown's time with the 76ers would solely depend on how the team fared. It was a pity that the August 23 match defeat put Brown in a difficult position

It will be a while for the Philadelphia 76ers to come to terms with the loss they suffered at the hands of the Boston Celtics on Sunday, August 23. They were beaten 110-106 and this marked a first-round sweep as the Celtics will now make it to the next round and presumably face-off against the Toronto Raptors who lead the series against the Brooklyn Nets 3-0. Currently, if there's one man taking the flak for the Sixer's exit, it's coach Brett Brown, but should he be the only man to take the blame?

Ahead of the season, there were talks about how Brown's time with the 76ers would solely depend on how the team fared. It was a pity the exit just makes Brown's position all the more difficult to be in. While the team might not have had the services of their star Ben Simmons, it's hard to imagine what changes the Sixers management would ring in. For starters, if they intend to revamp the coaching staff, then the coach would have to exit. However, the Sixers' issue is more than just the coach.

But more on that later. While it may be easy to blame Brown for the team's below-par run, he was also the man who has been with the Sixers for seven seasons and took them from strength to strength. Under his role, the team's most notable was 2016 seasons where they had a heck of a run, inching close to the conference finals. His quote in the post-game press conference on Sunday, August 23, all but looked like the end of the journey with the Sixers. When asked about whether the current roster was suited for deep playoff runs, he said: “It’s true, every team has injuries. I don’t know many that only 19 out of 65 times had the starting group. It was a massive overhaul for me trying to help the team, coach the team. I think this particular series I was worried from the beginning, just because of matchups … I overestimated our ability to get stuck into people and guard wing players with the group that we had.”

Social media had fans debating the future of the coach as well. "Brett Brown going to be fired within the next few days I’m thinking," opined one of the fans after the game.

For one of the fans, the issue was more than just Brown. "All these articles about what’s wrong with the @sixers. Poor leadership lead to underperforming and undisciplined play. Bad judgement from the front office lead to tying up way to much money into players that don’t deserve it. It’s a top to bottom problem not just Brett Brown," the tweet read.

"This season was riddled with an amazing abundance of injuries,” Brown had explained in the post-match conference. “This season was a challenge putting people where they should have been placed. I liked where we ended up, getting Ben off-ball, the things that he did as a sort of four-man. In general, ending with Ben’s injury this year, you really never felt like you jumped into a routine or a rhythm. That’s probably the thought that will linger the most."

For now, it does look like it's time for Brown to go. Only time will tell the changes the Sixers management will ring in.
