Spoilers for ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’

Sacha Baron Cohen has returned nearly 14 years later with his iconic character Borat Sagdiyev, the Kazakhstani news reporter, but with a bigger mission on mind this time. In ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’, the sequel to the 2006 hit mockumentary comedy film ‘Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’, the actor tries to shed light on prevailing issues of America and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic with sheer ridiculousness.

Directed by Larry Charles, ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ follows the titular character, who is sent on a secret mission to the “US&A” by the president of Kazakhstan to earn the trust of President Donald Trump. Borat has no choice but to fulfill the mission to redeem himself, after the downfall of his native nation which was propelled by his previous film. And how is this achieved? By gifting the vice-president Mike Pence with Johnny the Monkey, who is Kazakhstan’s Minister of Culture.

The movie thus takes off from there as it navigates Borat’s journey to America and follows all the misadventures that unfold in the pursuit of his ultimate mission to save himself from being executed, should he fail to achieve what he’s been asked to do. This only becomes harder than imagined for Borat and seems almost impossible, when his daughter Tutar manages to transport herself in a cargo ship to American along with Johnny the Monkey.

As the movie progresses, it details the political climate in the US, the Democrats vs Republicans debate among the citizens, scandals surrounding some of the most prominent figures, and the onset of the novel coronavirus along with other relevant issues such as women empowerment and the unpopular opinion about Jews and the Holocaust.

Undeniably, Cohen’s comic delivery and acting chops headline the film, while his attempt at drawing attention towards certain serious issues keeps you gripped throughout. Meanwhile, Maria Bakalova, who plays the role of Borat’s daughter Tutar, makes for yet another reason to watch the film. It would only be fair to say that if there was any other aspect from the film that overpowered Cohen’s talent, it would be Bakalova’s impeccable acting skills. ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ is timely and comes across as a breath of air. Besides the entertainment factor, the film has managed to pull a few strings to get its message across.

Like the original, ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ also runs high on obscenity. The creators have left no stone unturned to offer content that aces at making you cringe along with delivering the laughs.

'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm' will be available to stream on Amazon Prime from October 23.
