Nicki Minaj slammed for dissing Rosa Parks in new song 'Yikes' during Black History Month
Nicki Minaj has stirred controversy once again when she name-dropped and dissed civil rights icon Rosa Parks on her new songs titled 'Yikes' which was shared February 3.
Twitter has reacted in a frenzy of gifs and comments for the singer, with many referring to Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Aretha Franklin in heaven raining down some whoopings for their fellow African-American sister.
The snippet has Minaj miming to the camera while the song plays in the recording studio. The offensive lyrics are as follows, "You b*tches Rosa Parks. Uh oh, get ya ass up", which clowns the fact the Rosa Parks refused to get up on the bus.
This isn't the first time Minaj has triggered controversies. In August 2018, she dropped a song called 'Barbie Dreams' in which she allegedly dissed 10 rappers and one American football player, including Eminem, DJ Khaled, Drake, and 50 Cent.
Nicki Minaj got into a public tweet feud with rapper Travis Scott in the exact same month as the release of 'Barbie Dreams'. It led to a feud with American media personality Kylie Jenner who is the wife of Travis Scott. One of Minaj's earlier beefs was noted in the early 2010s, when both Minaj and Iggy Azalea were becoming big names in hip-hop. At a 2015 BET Awards ceremony, Minaj seemed to have dissed Azalea during her acceptance speech.
The 'Yikes' lyrics couldn't have come at a more ironic time, as Black History Month takes place in February and considering the fact that Rosa Parks has been known as a respected figure in the African-American community.
Dissing is a hallowed tradition in rap and hip hop, and Minaj has found a creative method to intentionally spark controversy as a means to create buzz around her music as well as engender a pattern of thinking on sensitive matters from a different angle (even if it is an entirely different angle altogether).
