American hip-hop group Beastie Boys are set to release their new documentary for 2020 titled 'Beastie Boys Story'.

The two-hour Apple TV+ feature will reveal an in-depth look at the band's four-decade spanning musical career as well as an intimate personal reflection on their friendship while Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz talk about the band's history on stage.

The synopsis on Apple TV+'s official site reads, "Here's a little story they're about to tell ... Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz share the story of their band and 40 years of friendship in a live documentary experience directed by friend, collaborator, and their former grandfather, Spike Jonze."

Part of the documentary is a recording of the live show filmed in 2019 that Jonze directed titled 'Beastie Boys Story: As Told By Michael Diamond & Adam Horovitz'. The show ran for three nights only: at Philadelphia’s Tower Theater on April 5, 2019 on its first night and then the follow-up nights at the Kings Theater in Brooklyn, New York.

The upcoming documentary gives fans from around the world the only chance to see the live-recorded show.

Who's in it and who's behind it?

While the starring roles are two of the three Beastie Boys members, namely Mike "Mike D" Diamond "Ad-Rock" and Adam Horovitz, the directing credits is owed to Spike Jonze. He is also a producer on the feature.

The Beastie Boys have a longstanding friendship with Jonze who directed their music videos 'Sabotage', 'Time For Livin’, 'Rickey’s Theme',  and 'Sure Shot'. The 'Sabotage' music video is often cited as one of the best music videos ever made. While Jonze has worked on several TV series over the past few years, the 'Beastie Boys Story' documentary marks his first theatrical production since the 2013 sci-fi/romance film 'Her' (which received great critical acclaim and success).

Jonze has also directed 'Where the Wild Things Are', 'Adaptation', and 'Being John Malkovich'.

Amanda Adelson and Jason Baum are the producers, alongside Jonze, on the new documentary. Adelson is commonly known for her work on the 2018 comedy-drama film 'Mid90s' as well as being a writer for the Motley Crue autobiographical film 'The Dirt' which released last year.

Baum is a Grammy Award-winning filmmaker who has worked on Kendrick Lamar's music video for 'Humble' and Arcade Fire's 'We Exist' music video, among numerous other music videos.

Executive producers include Diamond, Horovitz and Jonah Hill.
