'Avengers Endgame': J.A.R.V.I.S was a fitting tribute to Howard and Tony Stark's butler

'Avengers Endgame', a fitting conclusion to 10 years worth of Marvel storytelling, released a year ago. The Marvel film was filled with iconic moments, packed with bittersweet nostalgia, as we had to bid goodbye to some of our favourite characters. Yet, even a year later, it's hard not to reminisce about this blockbuster of a film, which featured moments from the old films along well with surprising appearance.

In this regard, one appearance that took us by surprise was that of Edwin Jarvis. For those who are not entirely well-versed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, J.A.R.V.I.S was originally introduced during Iron Man (2008), where the character was Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) personal user interface computer system. It assisted Tony in building the Iron Man suit and then becomes the UI inside the suit itself. It ran business for Stark industries as well as security for Tony Stark's mansion.  During the course of the films, J.A.R.V.IS (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System) fuses with the Mind Stone, and evolves into the Vision Android in 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'.

On the television show, 'Agent Carter', we learned of Jarvis's backstory. The interface was inspired by Howard Stark's personal butler, Edwin Jarvis. On the show, Jarvis appeared as a main character, who helped Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in numerous missions. And then he actually appeared in 'Avengers Endgame'.

Tony and Steve Rogers had to travel back to 1970 to get the Tesseract and Pym Particles, and in doing so, Tony encountered a young version of his father Howard (John Slattery). While Steve looks longingly at Peggy, Tony and Howard have some touching moments, as Howard's wife is pregnant with soon-to-be-born Tony. Tony, who has had a very turbulent relationship with his father, finally comes to peace with it. Howard gets into his car, and next to him is Jarvis, played by James D'Arcy from 'Agent Carter'. This was a bittersweet moment for fans of the films as well as the TV show, who have been waiting for something like this for a long time.

It goes without saying that the AI's name was a tribute to Tony's butler. In fact, every AI mentioned in the films, have a little anecdote. After J.A.R.V.I.S was integrated with the Vision, it was replaced by F.R.I.D.A.Y ( Female Replacement Intelligent Digital Assistant Youth). Later, in 'Spider-Man: Far From Home', we meet E.D.I.T.H (Even Dead I'm The Hero) an artificial intelligence system in a pair of sunglasses. This was bequeathed to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) by Tony. Each of the AI's have a personality in the films, and that's what makes them so endearing.
