In the premiere episode of the series, we are introduced to a mysterious plot surrounding the disappearance of Joy Delaney (Annette Bening), a recently retired woman.

Despite her absence causing little concern for her husband Stan Delaney (Sam Neill), their four adult children come together to solve the mystery.

Episode 7 meticulously recounts the events leading up to Joy's disappearance, detailing her day from start to finish.

It is revealed that Joy goes to the local market to purchase apples but suffers an injury after falling off her bicycle due to a pothole. She injures her leg and wraps her jacket to stop the bleeding.

She calls each of her children but none of them responds. Therefore, she has to walk back home. She leaves her blood-soaked jacket near the dumpster.

When she comes back home, she finds Harry Haddad's memoir lying on the table in which he confesses that he cheated in his games, leading to a heated confrontation with her husband.

As she tries to stop him, he gets furious and starts throwing things around. The argument escalates, resulting in Stan storming out of the house after Joy accidentally hits Stan in the face.

Joy then checks her phone and none of her children have called or texted her back. She feels unseen in her own house and assumes that nobody would even care if she were gone.

She leaves her phone in the laundry basket and steps out for a drink. Joy then calls Savannah (Georgia Flood), who comes to meet her. Joy decides to go incognito with Savannah for a few days.

Stan appears to be the prime suspect in Joy Delaney's case. Throughout the series, several pieces of evidence and motives are discovered that suggest that Stan killed his wife.

Even his own children consider him as a murderer. However, it turns out that Stan didn't kill his wife. In fact, he dearly loves her, despite all the issues in their marriage.

Savannah escorts Joy to her secluded cabin in the mountains, casually mentioning that while there's no cell phone reception, they can still use the landline to contact Joy's family.

However, Savannah severs this last link to the outside world by cutting the landline wire, effectively isolating Joy.

Throughout their time together, Savannah is aware of the significant attention drawn to Joy's disappearance, with her family anxiously searching and her husband facing scrutiny. Despite this knowledge, Savannah keeps Joy in the dark about the situation.

As Joy expresses her desire to return home, Savannah appears reluctant. It's during this time that Joy discovers a gun in Savannah's purse, leading her to realize the potential danger she's in.

While driving, Savannah makes a series of reckless decisions, including taking the wrong route and speeding, all the while confessing her jealousy towards Joy's family and her intentions to destroy it.

Tragically, their journey ends in a car crash, resulting in Joy being rescued by authorities while Savannah vanishes without a trace.
