'Apologize to Sunoo': Did Enhypen member get fat-shamed by group AGAIN?

K-pop fans are upset as Enhypen's Sunoo has time and again been teased for his weight by his own group members

The K-pop industry is quite rigid when it comes to body sizes forcing minor idols to diet and work out so that they can fit the standard. This has led to fans, as well as their own peers fat-shaming those artists who do not fit the skinny standard even the slightest. TWICE fans were shocked with the way Jeongyeon was fat-shamed for gaining a little weight due to surgery medicines while NMIXX fans were upset after Knetz mocked 16-year-old Jiwoo for having slightly thicker thighs. But with Enhypen’s Sunoo being teased about his weight by his own group members have fans disappointed.

While Sunoo more or less fits the slim standard that K-pop has been set for their male idols, his chubby cheeks have often been a point of contention. While Enhypen fans find the 19-year-old idol adorable, his own members have time and again joked about his weight to the extent that Engenes (Enhypen’s fandom) have started comparing it to fat-shaming. The K-pop group had recently been slammed after Sunoo revealed that they made jokes calling him a “wild boar” or “elephant.” With not even a month passing, on July 13, Enhypen was again called out for allegedly fat-shaming the idol again.

Enhypen read a comment about Sunoo

Enhypen was online on July 13 to chat with fans. At one point, Sunghoon read a comment left by a fan. The fanbase that translated it, tweeted it as, “Sunoo’s face looks thin (The Korean phrase used means losing weight on face due to tiredness or hardship).” Sunoo said no while Ni-ki, Sunghoon and Jay laugh and said no as well. Sunoo then replied, “Ha ha, so funny,” and they all laugh. This blew up on Twitter as fans pointed out that even if Sunoo was laughing, the boys were fat-shaming him again. However, the fanbase that translated it later clarified that there was a misunderstanding.

Two fans got together and translated it again and shared that the comment that Sunghoon had read had said, “Sunoo’s face looks haggard.” And the members saying no was in response to this comment. Despite the clarification, Engenes are still divided. One fan tweeted, “They need to know that these types of jokes aren’t funny :// #ApologizetoSunoo.” Another Engene posted, “The en in engene stands for enabler.” Fans also brought back past instances where the boys joked with Sunoo that fans felt went a little too far, “Stop bullying.”

One fan added, “THERES A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FUNNY JOKE AND AN INSULT JOKE! NO HATE BUT THEY SHOULD BE EDUCATED IN A NICE WAY! I HOPE THIS HASHTAG WILL REACH THE MEMBERS AND THE COMPANY! SUNOO YOU ARE LOVED, ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT.” Another Engene pointed out, “There's someone here who laughs even tho he's mad this is the proof that sunoo is affected by their words, but he conceals it with laughter so don't f**king use the HE WAS LAUGHING AT IT TOO card to justify their insensitive behavior.”

Fans also shared that even if there was a mistranslation, Sunoo was owed an apology for past comments, “Mistranslation or not, ENHYPEN members owe Sunoo an apology. There was no proper apology made, it keeps on delaying, and body shaming just keeps on happening. Is this how y'all apologize to Sunoo? To continually repeat the same mistake?” Another said, “Why would you even read a comment like that in the first place... it's not even good to say such thing.”

One added, “The real trans was as bad.. Why would you read a comment that will probably lose someone's confidence.” Another fan said, “Engenes act like this mistranslation is the reason why enhypen are getting called out rn, when in fact it is the members' fault. sunoo is the victim here, not the people who bodyshamed their friend.” Fans also made a compilation of multiple times Enhypen have joked about Sunoo’s weight including a clip of him even saying, “So sometimes it’s not that funny.”
