Blinks share their rage with Rolling Stone Magazine after their recent article belittling Blackpink members, Jisoo and Lisa (YG Entertainment)

Over the last few years, as the genre of K-pop kept gaining global popularity, fans of the genre became more and more defensive about their favorite K-pop idols. With the rise of the boy group BTS and the girl group Blackpink, ARMYs (fans of BTS) and Blinks (fans of Blackpink) have been keeping their eye out for negativity against members of the group by rightfully calling out trolls. Twitter has now become a fan platform where fans trend phrases and hashtags to get their voices heard and it seems like this is working well for fans of Blackpink.

On July 12, fans of K-pop took to Twitter to express their displeasure with the International magazine, Rolling Stone. In one of their most recent articles about Blackpink, the magazine was found to have written badly about two of the four Blackpink members. In their article, Rolling Stone allegedly mocked Jisoo's talents. Not only that but fans took notice of how Lisa's solo debut achievements were belittled in the same article as well. Fans demanded an apology for the two Blackpink members as they trended 'Apologize to Lisa' and 'Apologize to Jisoo' on Twitter.

Rolling Stone under fire for disrespecting Jisoo

In the article released on July 5, Rolling Stone Korea talked about how Blackpink and how the four-member girl group from YG Entertainment had reached the apex of the music industry with their glamor and attitude. The article seemed like a fan-written piece but it initially sent out the wrong message after the article disrespected Jisoo. After the original article was released, fans pointed out how Jisoo's achievements were mocked as Blackpink's main vocal was deemed talentless by the writer of the article. The article said, "Although she does not possess the most outstanding talent in the group as a vocalist or dancer, her growth is much more apparent."

Fans took offense at the article as it called Blackpink's main vocal someone who does not possess "outstanding talent". The article has since been updated and the said part has been edited out of the current online version but fans of the girl group are still upset at Jisoo being disrespected. One fan said, "Rolling stone korea saying jisoo’s talent in vocal and dance are not outstanding then saying its not possible to imagine blackpink without her voice is so contradicting and dumb." One more fan defended, "JISOO IS ONE OF THE MOST STABLE VOCALIST IN BLACKPINK. SHE FOLLOWED THE CHOREOGRAPHY SMOOTHLY. SHE'S A VERSATILE ACTRESS. NOW, THE MOST RICHEST BLACKPINK MEMBER. THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT WORDS TO DESCRIBE HER."

Another fan said, "That Rolling Stones article coming from a Korean journalist already shows how Jisoo is/ will be treated as being a part of Blackpink She will never have a solo at this point They exactly know what they are doing with those interviews and “blinks” took the bite as always." One more fan said, "Rolling Stone has been so unprofessional from not posting jennie, to mistaking Rosé’s name, to being xenophobic to Lisa to diminishing Jisoo’s efforts. I hope @BLACKPINK never work with them again."

Lisa's achievements belittled by Rolling Stone Korea

As if disrespecting one Blackpink member was not enough, the girl group's fans state that Thai-born Lisa too was disrespected in the article. In the Rolling Stone article, Lisa's solo success was belittled where she was "fetishized" as the magazine article called her 'exotic'. In the article, fans noticed that Lisa was described as an exotic member of the girl group because she is the only international Blackpink member. The article said, "The unique presence of Lisa, created by her overpowering physical charm and exotic appearance, coupled with her competence as a rapper, highlight her identity as a solo artist."

Fans took offense claiming that Lisa being deemed exotic to fit the narrative of the article was xenophobic and racist towards the rapper. Not only that but the article talked about her rapping in Blackpink's singles like 'DDU-DU DDU-DU' and 'How You Like That' which said that Lisa's "pronunciation in those songs is natural enough to prevent the listener from sensing any kinks from the foreign member of the group." Blinks are enraged by the racist attack on Lisa as they said, "IN BIG 2022 Rolling Stone Korea still doing some racist remarks in their articles calling lisa an exotic member????" One fan said, "And just like that, the racist Rolling Stone KR article forgotten in favor of the damage control which is the PUBG event? Is it always going to be like this? Lisa's mistreatment & racial discrimination swept under the rug in favor of a new content?"

Another fan said, "First photo is rolling stone worldwide, second photo is rolling stone korea. rolling stone managed to compliment and acknowledge lisa and her roots without having racist undertones before. guess what changed? koreans." One more fan said, "Lisa is the most successful Kpop soloist, but all rolling stone Korea wants to write about is her pronunciation and how “exotic” she looks." One fan said, "With a big name like Rolling Stone you would easily think theyre credible & professional but seeing their biased comments & defamation towards the other 3 members. Its very embarrassing. Thats very unprofessional of you. Such a pity for RS."
