'American Idol' Season 18: Judges halt Saveria's chances of going to Hollywood, fans slam the 'crazy' decision

Although Saveria had the singing chops and the support of Katy Perry, both Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie felt she didn't have the requisite wow factor

The new season of American Idol is here and the first episode just premiered on February 16. This is the long-running TV show's eighteenth season overall and its third season on its new home on the ABC network.

Fans were thrilled to once again see their beloved judges from last year - Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, along with longtime host Ryan Seacrest and the show's fulltime mentor, Bobby Bones, but their decisions on the show left many viewers fuming.

This year's contestants have already thrown up quite a few surprises while auditioning, with some being spectacularly bad and others being extraordinarily good! Other singers have been a bit polarizing, leaving fans divided as to whether they were good enough for 'American Idol'. One perfect example of this is the Canadian singer Saveria, who while possessing an amazing voice and vocal chops, failed to win over the judges.

Katy was a big believer in Saveria, who sang one of her own originals, 'Tell Me This Is Real' and her beautiful voice seemed certain to see her sail through to the Hollywood portion of the competition. But while Katy was a clear fan, the others, Luke and Richie, weren't so impressed. They wanted to be wowed and amazed and they just weren't getting that from Saveria's performance. So they took a big call and denied Saveria a chance to go through to Hollywood.

Katy threw a huge fit on hearing that they didn't agree with her assessment and said that the judges needed to get their hearing checked. Meanwhile online, fans were similarly stuck in two camps when it came to Saveria - some fans agreed with Richie's opinion, saying "Not feeling it from her... #AmericanIdol Yup Lionel she was the zzzzz." Another viewer chimed in, saying "Saveria’s song/style were good, don’t love her original tho [sic]."

Whereas other fans felt outraged that Saveria didn't make it through when she clearly had great vocal ability. "Are they really not sending her to Hollywood. What. #AmericanIdol" said one dumbfounded Twitter user. "Ok, how is she not famous here in Canada yet??? She's great!" said another clearly disappointed fan. "Are they crazy ?!??!?!" said another Saveria believer.

While it's sad to not see Saveria make it through to the Hollywood portion of the competition, at least she's earned some more fans by appearing on 'American Idol'. We hope that we haven't seen the last of her talents and that the super-good Saveria makes it huge soon!
