Why was Amanda Bynes put into conservatorship? Fans ask to 'support her like Britney’
Pop star Britney Spears had her loyal fans to thank after they pushed the ‘#FreeBritney’ movement on social media and on the streets to make sure her conservatorship ends. And, it looks like actress Amanda Bynes might need the same kind of love and prayers from her fan army as she filed her conservatorship to end on Wednesday, February 23. The move came after nearly nine years after the actress was first placed under the conservatorship in 2013.
According to Page Six, the ‘Big Fat Liar’ star filed documents in the court requesting to terminate both the conservatorship of her person and estate in a petition that was submitted at the Ventura County Superior Court in California. The 35-year-old actress, who is best known for genius comedic timing, also filed a capacity declaration on Tuesday, February 22 since California requires updated records on the conservatee’s mental state from their physician, psychologist, or religious healing practitioner. The publication reported that a hearing for Amanda Bynes’ case has been scheduled for March 22.

Why was Amanda Bynes put into conservatorship?
While Amanda Bynes was doing pretty fine for her professionally, it was her personal troubles that led to her conservatorship in August 2013. The mother of the Nickelodeon alum Lynn Bynes, got the legal control along with her personal, medical and financial affairs after the actress got hospitalized on an involuntary psychiatric hold for allegedly starting a small fire in a stranger’s driveway. In 2014, the renowned actress via Twitter revealed that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a second 5150 hold. In her tweets against her father Rick Bynes, which she later retracted, she claimed that he had sexually, physically and verbally abused her. She later tweeted that her father had never abused her blaming the accusations on a microchip in her brain.
In the last few years, Amanda has been in and out of mental health facilities whilst also battling her addiction. In 2018, the actress announced that she had been sober for four years. However, two months later she reportedly had a “stress-related relapse.” In September 2021, she spoke to Page Six about her well-being saying she was “doing really well, besides anxiety and trauma,” and that her conservatorship could be terminated whenever it was “no longer convenient.”
‘We need to support her the way we did Britney guys’
Social media users took to Twitter to react to the latest news as one of the users stated, “Amanda Bynes loves and is grateful for her family’s support. Please don’t demonize her parents and compare her situation to Britney’s when her folk have been nothing but there for her. She’s going to school, she’s sober, and she herself thanks her family for that.” Another stated, “Omg I feel like I had no idea she was under one! i’m glad people are following in Britney’s footsteps!!” One shared, “Unfortunately she actually needs it.” Another added, “We need to support her the way we did britney guys.”
The next one tweeted, “I didnt know she was under conservatorship i must be living under a rock omg. we stand with her ! #FreeAmanda” Whereas, one individual posted, “We’ll be praying for her freedom.” Another person said, “Good for her, its a big step and I'm glad she has taken initiative best wishes for her and her future”, as one user concluded, “I’m all for ending unnecessary conservatorships but as a fan I care about her wellbeing and it seems as if she really needs to be in one unfortunately.”
