'All American' Season 2: Will Spencer James choose coach Billy Baker over his family?
Inspired by the real-life story of NFL Superbowl champion Spencer Paysinger, 'All American' chronicles the life of teenager Spencer James, played by Daniel Ezra. The CW series revolves around his conflicted adolescent years when he grew up in a low-income Los Angeles family from Crenshaw and later moved to Beverly Hills High, where his coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs) trained and guided him.
The first season ended on a cliffhanger as Spencer’s dad Corey James (Chad L. Coleman) was selected as the new American football coach for South Crenshaw High School, leaving Spencer torn between going back home to play for the team or staying at Beverly with coach Baker. Towards the end of the season, Spencer had to face his former team at South Crenshaw High in the state championship game and got a standing ovation by the South Crenshaw crowd even though he was on their cross-town rival Beverly Hills High's side.
Going by the official summary of the show, there could be some predictions. "The return of 'All American' finds Spencer James, now a football State Champion, with a tough decision to make. Does he stay in Beverly Hills and play for Coach Billy Baker? Or does he move back home to South LA, reunite with his mother, Grace (Karimah Westbrook), brother Dillon (Jalyn Hall), and play for his father, Corey – the new head coach for the South Crenshaw Chargers?"
"This isn’t an easy decision for him to make because it’s not just about football. It’s about choosing between the people he loves. No longer is Beverly Hills just some affluent place that represents his shot out of the hood. Now, he has friends there, including his antagonist turned ally, Asher (Cody Christian), who’s fighting to hold on to his football dreams. He has his girlfriend there, Layla (Greta Onieogou), who’s secretly battling her own demons. And most importantly, he has a second family there in the Bakers – Billy, Laura (Monét Mazur), Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) and Olivia (Samantha Logan) – who are struggling to adapt to the new normal of their broken home."
"However, when Spencer’s thrown an unexpected curveball, the fallout to his life will end up affecting everyone he holds dear, including his best friend, Coop (Bre-Z), who’s trying to take control of her life by stepping back from gangs and pursuing her musical dreams." The one-minute trailer shows how his close ones wonder which side he will choose and going by the looks, it seems it will be Coach Baker. In the trailer, Baker tells James: "Thinking about fixing things and actually fixing things are two different things."
As the new season premieres on October 7, his crucial decision will become the crux of the story.
