'All American' Season 2 Episode 16 Review: A bittersweet finale with a worrying cliffhanger

The second season finale was perhaps a tad chaotic as many plotlines had to be addressed

'All American' might have many flaws, including several open-ended storylines. Yet it knows how to twist the knife with its emotional scenes and performances. The second season finale was perhaps a tad chaotic as many plotlines had to be addressed, be it the threat of the school becoming a magnet one, Coach Billy (Taye Diggs) deciding to leave South Crenshaw for good, Asher and Olivia at crossroads in their relationship, and Spencer's arm injury making an unpleasant return as a promising plotline for the third season.

More than football and music and even relationship drama, 'All American' is best when it explores familial relationships, and close bonds between friends. It has been a nerve-wracking year for Spencer (Daniel Ezra), as his father Corey died, Tyrone got shot, and then he himself suffered a painful injury. In the middle of all this, Coach Billy decides to resign. As there have been so many curveballs, Spencer admits that he hasn't yet processed that.

But despite all this chaos, Spencer is always there for his family and closest friend Olivia (Samantha Logan). Olivia almost has a relapse, but Spencer's welfare check-in at her place makes her realize she isn't alone. For sure, there's strong chemistry between the two of them, more than Asher-Olivia, or even Spencer-Layla for that matter. It will take some time to brew further, but there is a strong chance that the writers are waiting to build this up further over time. Let's get this right, writers.

Another heartwarming scene is between Jordan and Simone. After the whole pregnancy scare and drama that took place over the season, it was quite sweet to watch these two finally admit their feelings for each other. Jordan comes clean about his feelings, and utters the three irretrievable words. The best thing about saying those words? He gets a kiss in return. If only other couples on that show could resolve their issues so quickly. Looking at you, Billy and Laura. Laura stands up for Billy whenever someone talks smack about him, but tries to pretend for the rest of the time that she isn't rattled by the separation.

Tyrone's sister is around, and she isn't going to let go of Coop, for her 'hand' in Tyrone's death, so easily. Will Coop make it to her tour?

The season had it all — drugs, sex, pregnancy scares, gun wars and depression. What will the next season bring?

'All American' airs on Mondays at 9 pm on The CW.
