ACM Awards 2020: Dan and Shay bag Duo of the Year award, Internet says 'talented guys, but not country'

Fans took to Twitter to weigh in on the news with many commenting that the two are talented but not country

Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic when everything seems to go wrong, music is the only thing that lights up our moods, especially when staying indoors is all that's safe to do. Even though there are numerous reasons for us to complain this year, we just cannot deny the fact that we actually waited for the 55th Annual ACM Awards. Right from some jaw-dropping performances to the heartwarming speeches by our favorite winners, this night had the best of all. Despite the coronavirus-induced restrictions, the annual music event, hosted by first-time host Keith Urban, was held live from Nashville, Tennessee.

The award ceremony aired live from three iconic country music venues including Grand Ole Opry House, Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium and The Bluebird Cafe. It was broadcasted on Wednesday, September 16, live from 8 pm to 11 pm on CBS Television Network. It can also be streamed on demand on CBS All Access. The ACM Awards were originally scheduled to broadcast live from Las Vegas at MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 5 but were postponed due to the ongoing pandemic.

Among the many nominations and winners, the Duo of the Year award was bagged by Dan and Shay. Fans took to Twitter to weigh in on the news with many commenting that the two are talented but not country. One user tweeted, “Nice set old dominion. Off to a bad start though with Dan & Shay. Talented guys but not country." Another person tweeted, "Dan and Shay being ACM country duo of the year almost makes me physically ill. #ACMawards."

Another user took to the micro-blogging website and wrote, "God why do Dan and Shay always win over Florida Georgia Line. Like FGL has come out with a new amazing ep 'beer:30' and a single this year! Why don’t people see that they’re amazing too! #ACMawards. so proud of you @PlayBkPlay @THubbmusic and love you sooo much." While one user wrote, "Anyone else think Dan and shay shouldn't have won the #ACMawards duo of the year?"

Many others pointed out that they are not country artists. "Not a country artist." Another one wrote, "Sorry #ACMawards (and no disrespect to Dan + Shay) but @BrooksAndDunn should win duo of the year each and every year. One of the best country duo’s of all time." Another user tweeted,"@#ACMawards really Dan & Shay?!?!?!? Who the hell votes on this!!!"

Others nominated in the category include Brooks & Dunn, Brothers Osborne, Florida Georgia Line and Maddie & Tae. The event witnessed some breathtaking performances by Taylor Swift, Kelsea Ballerini, Gabby Barrett, Riley Green, Maren Morris, Old Dominion, Thomas Rhett featuring Jon Pardi and Tenille Townes, who performed at the Ryman. Jimmie Allen, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert featuring songwriters Natalie Hemby and Luke Dick, and Tim McGraw took the stage by storm at The Bluebird and Kane Brown, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Dan + Shay, Florida Georgia Line, Mickey Guyton, Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen performed from the Opry.
