Netflix's upcoming gritty copper drama 'Young Wallander' is not for the weakhearted. Based on the Swedish novels by author Henning Mankell, 'Young Wallander' tells the story of popular detective Kurt Wallander's first case ever - one that gave him sleepless nights and frustrating days. The season is set to focus on his formative years as a cop and detective and how he went on to become one of the most iconic figures in the Nordic detective scene.

Plot

According to the official synopsis of the series, "Based on the best selling Kurt Wallander novels by Henning Mankell, a modern reimagining of the legendary detective, Kurt Wallander, who must navigate the increasingly violent environment of present-day Sweden. When he is unable to save a teenager from a gruesome attack, Wallander must learn to cope with his guilt in order to solve the crime."

More details about the plot explain how the season is set to focus on the detective in his early 20s and will concentrate on his formative experiences - professional and personal as he takes on his first-ever case. After recently graduating from the police academy, he suddenly witnesses a brutal crime and is pulled into solving it under the wing of superintendent Hemberg.

Cast

The new series stars Adam Pålsson (known for 'Don't Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves', 'Ted: För kärlekens skull' and 'The Bridge') as Kurt Wallander, Richard Dillane (best known for 'Argo') as Hemberg, Leanne Best ('Ripper Street' and 'Fortitude') as Frida Rask, and Ellise Chappell ('Poldark') as Mona. 

Creators 

'Young Wallander' is based on the books by author Henning Mankell, whose books were previously made into the BBC adaptation 'Wallander' that ran between 2008 and 2016, and starred Kenneth Branagh as the titular cop. Ole Endresen and Jens Jonsson are directing from a script written by Anoo Bhagavan and Benjamin Harris. The series is produced by Banijay-backed Yellow Bird UK.

In 'Young Wallander' we meet him right as Kurt graduates from the police academy and is thrown into his first-ever case. As seen in the below trailer, he witnesses a brutal crime and his supervisor advises him, “Wallander, don’t skip the counseling.”
