Every moment is precious

As we follow Jae-hyun in his quest to reunite with his deceased wife, Yi-hoo, we learn that Yonder isn't quite the heaven that it was advertised to be. It caused euthanasia rates to skyrocket and the outcome of that is not even barely justified. Jae-hyun reunites with his wife and initially feels a sense of relief. But as time passes, he notices that there is nothing to do in this supposed heaven. Nothing changes there; everybody does the same thing day in and out. They may seem happy and laughing, but inside, they are all lonely souls.

Jae-hyun sees his daughter in the crib with a look of hope. However, that shatters soon as Yi-hoo discovers that their baby isn't growing. They realize that nothing changes, so the baby will stay like this forever. Unable to accept this, Yi-hoo breaks down and sneaks out to the Protocol Center. Later, Jae-hyun, in an emotional conversation, explains to Yi-hoo why moments are precious. He says every moment is precious because we know they have passed and won't return. It's difficult to do that in a world where there is no change or the drive that makes us do things. The need to survive is not a thing in this heaven.

Yi-hoo and Jae-hyun accept fate

Coming to the realization that this world is not for them, Yi-hoo and Jae-hyun drink a liquid substance that Yi-hoo procured from the Protocol Center. The concoction is supposed to take her somewhere dark. Once they drink it, they grow closer as they are ready to accept whatever lies ahead. The sky turns dark and an eclipse occurs, with clouds covering the sky creating an ominous scene. After a blackout, Jae-hyun is seen at a hospital with his Hacker and Cho Eun. The three go to meet Seiren and Jae-hyun asks him to stop the 'Yonder'. Serein denies it as her husband and daughter are there. The three leave the room as the outro rolls in, with Jae-hyun reminiscing his precious moments with Yi-hoo.

This ending is gut-wrenching as the sadness of leaving your love and knowing that you'll never see them again is quite frightening, to say the least. On top of that, choosing to end your life is equally terrifying as well. The series shows both these otherwise scary aspects in a very beautiful way.

'Yonder' is available on Paramount+.
