'X-Men': Wolverine might make MCU debut with a lesser-known team instead of Marvel's merry mutants
He might have become famous as a member of the X-Men but Wolverine is first and foremost a Canadian superhero. And as such, his first team wasn't Charles Xavier's band of mutants, it was the Canadian government-sponsored superhero squad known as Alpha Flight.
Now there are some rumors that have surfaced online that suggest that an Alpha Flight project could be in the works and that could signal the debut of Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to reports by Knight Edge's Caleb Williams and scooper Charles Murphy, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige sees potential in Alpha Flight and is interested in bringing the lesser-known team into the MCU. In more recent times, Alpha Flight has become more of a support staff for Captain Marvel in the comics so there's a pretty good chance they might show up in Brie Larson's next outing as the cosmic superhero. And that's the perfect opportunity to bring Wolverine into the MCU.
Of course, there are more reasons to be excited about Alpha Flight than just Wolverine. The team is also home to Northstar, one of the first openly gay superheroes in all of Marveldom.
Throw in Guardian, Vindicator, Sasquatch, Shaman, Snowbird and Puck, and you've got one kickass group of heroes. These champions of the Great White North are just as heroic as their American counterparts in the Avengers but they also bring a unique set of powers and skills to the table. The best part of Wolverine's association with Alpha Flight is that he's sort of the Batman of the group. He is a valued member and he's always there when they need him but he's more of an occasional ally than a permanent teammate, freeing him up for other adventures in the wider world of the Cinematic Universe.
Ultimately, if Wolverine were to be included in some future Alpha Flight project, it would help ease mutants into the MCU without resorting for some over-the-top cosmic event to bring them in. And as dramatic as the X-Men tend to be, it would be a lot better to see them join the MCU organically instead of in some strange forced manner.
