Is Wizkid's ‘Made in Lagos’ hit owing to Burna Boy? Fans say rapper's project makes 'wizzy album look average’

Nigerian rapper-songwriter Wizkid has dropped his brand new album titled ‘Made in Lagos’ also stylised as ‘MIL’. The fourth studio album from the 30-year-old artiste was first supposed to hit the Internet on October 15 but he delayed it to show respect to activists protesting police brutality in his native Nigeria.

The album, which was first announced three years ago, comes packed with 14 songs, and consists of guest verses from artistes like Burna Boy, Skepta, Ella Mai, HER and a few others. ‘Made in Lagos’ is getting a lot of positive reviews from the Internet but the song ‘Ginger’ from the official playlist is separately making a lot of noise and it might be due to Wizkid’s collaboration with rapper Burna Boy who also hails from Nigeria.

A lot of people on Twitter spoke about their collaboration where the majority of them praised Burna Boy and it appears as if Wizkid might be getting a lot of fuel for his album, all thanks to Burna. One said, “No bad vibes but Burna boy ", Twice as tall' make wizzy album look average. Na d girl wey dey always 'tell him say... ' be d problem.  Na rubbish d girl dey tell Wizkid not true talk.” Another said, “#MadeinLagos this Wizkid album just made me to go listen to #TwiceAsTall again. What a master piece by Burna boy.” A fan quipped, “I didn’t know I needed to hear Burna boy and Wizkid on a track until I heard ginger #MadeinLagos.” “Wizkid & Burna and the producer snapped on Ginger. Whew!. I can't stop listening to that song. WHAT A JAM!!!. Who produced that song abeg?” said another.

A tweet read, “bro i’m astonished. i think it would’ve worked better is it was burna ft wizkid though.” “Gather here if you know this collabo between wizkid and Burna boy is the best in the album @wizkidayo #MadeinLagos #MIL,” commented a user. One said, “I enjoyed wizkid’s Made In Lagos , Stand out track for me is the one with Burna Boy tho.”

‘Made in Lagos’ is a follow-up to Wizkid’s 2017 album ‘Sounds from the Other Side’ and is dedicated to his beloved home country in the wake of the unrest and police brutality in the US. According to Rap-up, Wizkid in an official statement said, “It has been beautiful to see Nigerians around the world coming together to protest against police brutality. Unity is key. The youth of Nigeria need our collective voices to continue to shine a spotlight to what is happening inside the country. I want to play my part in this and in the movement for a better Nigeria, a better place to live for ourselves, our families – our communities. We will get through this together. Together we move. #endSARS.”

Wizkid came up with two cover arts for his new project. According to Pulse Nigeria, the old album art celebrates Lagos phenomena like the three-wise men, Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge, Eyo, TBS, Lagos traffic and so forth. It connotes a sense of pride in the flawed beauty of Lagos. In the new cover art, Wizkid appears as a tired individual and is more about the flaws than beauty. ‘Made in Lagos’ has been released via Starboy and RCA UK and is available for streaming here.
