LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: We are in the eighth month of 2022 and we have seen a lot of big-budgeted movies arriving on the big screen. Once again it was the superhero flicks that dominated the big screens in the first half of the year, but it was ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ that turned out to be the biggest movie of the year. However, every now and then, a movie made on a mediocre budget tends to overshadow some of the biggest releases, and this year, it was Scott Derrickson’s ‘The Black Phone’ that floored the audiences with impeccable storytelling.

Released in June 2022, ‘The Black Phone’ sees Ethan Hawke playing the role of The Grabber, a child kidnapper and serial killer, who abducts a young boy named Finney and keeps him in his basement. However, he is not alone, and there are other kids present in the basement as well. Meanwhile, Finney’s sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) keeps on having psychic dreams about Finney and what he’s trying to do in the basement. Finney’s family and the police begin a search operation and find out disturbing details about the abductor. The movie was made on a production budget of $18 million and has earned more than $150 million at the global box office, making it one of the biggest movies of 2022.

Those who have seen the movie can’t stop raving about it and have continuously been demanding a sequel. So, can there be a sequel? Well, director Scott Derrickson has the perfect reply to this query.

While discussing the film in a recent interview with MovieWeb, the ‘Doctor Strange’ helmer revealed that he is “open” to telling more stories in the same universe and was shocked to see that the movie was still running in theatres. He also noted that he is so happy with the success of the movie that he hasn’t found the time to think about a sequel. He said, “It’s something I’m very open to. Of course, the studio would like that because it was such a big hit. But my gosh, the movie is still in theaters. I haven’t had time to really contemplate what that would be yet. But I’m certainly open to the idea because I do love it and the characters. It feels to me like there could be more.”

Derrickson’s statement about the possible sequel comes almost two months after ‘The Black Phone’s lead star Ethan Hawke also stated that he would love to be a part of ‘The Black Phone 2’ under one condition. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Hawke revealed that he would love to star in the sequel if Derrickson was interested in telling a story that’s worth sharing with the audiences.

Based on the short story of the same name, ‘The Black Phone’ also sees Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, and James Ronsone playing pivotal characters. As of now, ‘The Black Phone’ currently holds a rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.
