‘Project Hail Mary’ author teases sequel ahead of Ryan Gosling sci-fi film's release
Audiences all across the globe are eagerly awaiting the release of the upcoming science fiction movie 'Project Hail Mary' starring Ryan Gosling. The movie's trailer dropped last summer and rose to instant fame after bringing in 400 million views in just a week, thus making it the highest viewed trailer ever on Amazon MGM Studios's catalogue. Even before the movie's release, Rotten Tomatoes bestowed a 96% fresh rating. In an interesting turn of events, author Andy Weir, who wrote the eponymous novel on which the upcoming movie is based, shed light on his current novel in development and on the possibility of a potential sequel to 'Project Hail Mary'.
Speaking with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, Weir revealed that he's currently writing a new novel. The author stated, "I'm working on my next book right now. I'm not talking about it publicly, but it's science fiction, of course, and it's a new standalone story. It's not a sequel to anything." Weir was then asked about the sequel possibilities for 'Project Hail Mary', to which the author responded by saying that he does not have a good story to kickstart a sequel novel as of this moment. The author commented, "I know, I know, and many have pointed that out, but I don't feel like I have anything strong enough to run with yet. I'm working on this other story. Hopefully, in time, I've got bits and pieces of good ideas for sequels, but not enough to run with. If I'm going to sequel it, I want it to be good."
Thereafter, it does seem likely that fans of 'Project Hail Mary' will have to wait a while before news of a sequel is forthcoming. The upcoming movie stars Gosling in the leading role of a biologist turned teacher who suffered a fatal incident on board a starship, which caused him to suffer from amnesia. The other members of the cast include Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, Sandra Hüller, Liz Kingsman, Aaron Neil, and Orion Lee. Christopher Miller and Phil Lord have directed the upcoming movie. The duo is known for helming 'The Lego Movie' and 'Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs', in addition to the 'Spider-Verse' films. The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard of 'Daredevil' fame.
Weir's self-published 2011 novel 'The Martian' was adapted for the big screen in 2015, and featured Matt Damon in the leading role of astronaut Mark Watney, who was stranded on Mars. The film eventually earned seven Oscar nominations and was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and Damon won the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. 'Project Hail Mary' arrives exclusively in theatres on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
