Taylor Momsen addresses long-running 'Grinch' sequel rumors with Jim Carrey: 'Some things...'
Released in 2000, the holiday classic 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' remains beloved for its imaginative world-building and Jim Carrey's standout acting chops. Over the years, fan interest has fueled ongoing speculation about a potential sequel. While there is still no official confirmation that a follow-up is in development, Carrey's co-star Taylor Momsen recently shared new details about the much-anticipated sequel.
At Steven Tyler's 7th Annual Jam for Janie GRAMMY Awards Viewing Party on Sunday, February 1, Momsen, who played the character of Cindy Lou Who, opened up about the sequel. The actress told the New York Post that she hasn't heard anything concrete about a sequel to the film. "Not that I know of," Momsen said, adding, "Some things don't touch. Timeless classic. It's lasted this long."
While 'Grinch' sequel rumors continue, Momsen has been focused on her music career. In December, she and her band, 'The Pretty Reckless', re-recorded 'Where Are You Christmas?' for the film's 25th anniversary, revisiting the song she originally performed as a child. However, Momsen hasn't ruled out the possibility of the sequel entirely. After reuniting with Carrey at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in November 2025, she said to Entertainment Tonight, "When Jim Carrey asks you to do something, you pay attention so we'll see."
She further talked about reconnecting with Carrey at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "Talk about universal alignment. He inducted Soundgarden, and I was performing with Soundgarden, and when [drummer] Matt Cameron told me a few days before the ceremony that Jim was inducting them, my head about exploded. I could not believe what he was telling me because what are the odds of that?" When asked if it was intentional for them to be there together, Momsen said, "Not like that at all. Soundgarden was Jim's favorite band, and he hosted SNL [in 1996] and requested that Soundgarden be the musical guest."
Momsen added, "To have that connection culminate in one evening together, as it's the 25th anniversary of the Grinch, as we're putting out this record—all of which is complete and utter coincidence—was insane. I was so excited about it once I knew it was coming, but you don't know what to expect. It was so emotional and good to see him, and when I hugged him, it felt like coming home. I just was like, on a deep level, I know this person, even though I haven't seen you in 25 years. I still have chills from it, and now we’re back in touch, and it’s amazing."
