Disney’s live-action ‘Tangled’ sets release date as first look reveals Rapunzel and Mother Gothel
Disney unveiled the first official footage from its live-action ‘Tangled’ at D23 on August 14, offering the first look at Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. The preview begins by following Rapunzel’s long golden hair across stone steps before revealing Croft in the character’s purple costume. Hahn then emerges from behind a dark doorway as Gothel and calls, “Rapunzel!” Disney confirmed that ‘Tangled’ will open in theaters on March 31, 2028. The footage and theatrical date were announced while production is underway in Spain. Croft and Milo Manheim, who plays Flynn Rider, sent a video message from the set and appeared in their costumes.
“We’re busy filming in beautiful Spain,” Croft told the D23 audience. Manheim added, “We’ve been traveling throughout all of Spain through some very real and very beautiful places,” before saying that the team would share more from the film in the coming months. Michael Gracey, whose directing credits include ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Better Man,’ is directing the adaptation. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor wrote the screenplay, while Kristin Burr is producing. Diego Luna has also joined the cast, although Disney has not disclosed his role.
Hahn appeared onstage after the footage and addressed the fan campaign supporting her casting. “I love Mother Gothel, I love playing her, she’s the best kind of villain. She’s the kind who thinks they’re actually the hero!” she said at the event. The new film adapts Disney’s 2010 animated movie, in which Mandy Moore voiced Rapunzel and Zachary Levi voiced Flynn. The original animated film earned $607.6 million at the worldwide box office and later led to the short film ‘Tangled Ever After’ and a Disney Channel television series.
