'The Night Manager' Season 2 sets up a dangerous shift as a secret recording alters the stakes
Things are heating up fast in 'The Night Manager' Season 2. Episode 4 of the latest season raised the stakes with the shocking revelation that Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva) has learned that Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) is his secret father. As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that Teddy is desperate for Roper's attention and love. However, a secret recording turns the tables, foreshadowing a betrayal so deep that it could push Teddy to turn on Roper.
Teddy is portrayed as a complex figure in the show, who is powerful yet emotionally fragile. After the shocking discovery of Roper being his father, Teddy is left seeking approval. His need for approval makes viewers sympathise with him despite his violent work. Episode 4 opens on a deceptively peaceful note, with Teddy and Roper riding horses through the Colombian countryside and sharing what feels like a genuine father–son moment.
The connection between Pine and Teddy is also solidifying. During a tense interrogation, Pine treats Teddy as more than a criminal, and their growing, uneasy trust makes any future betrayal towards Roper a possibility. Moreover, during an exchange with Roper, Teddy speaks openly about his dreams and plans, making his vulnerability and hope for connection visible. This rare calm creates the illusion of stability, making the emotional shift that follows far more jarring, as the episode deliberately sets viewers up for a brutal unraveling of Teddy's trust and expectations.
After Teddy leaves the estate, Sandy Langbourne (Alistair Petrie) arrives with a fresh passport and outlines a dangerous political plan to Roper. With Pine unable to get close enough to eavesdrop, his team resorts to an extreme tactic: hiding a miniature microphone on one of Roper's guard dogs. What it captures becomes a turning point for the episode. In the recording, Roper and Sandy calmly discuss engineering instability in Colombia by delaying arms shipments and quietly using British political back channels to support a regime change.
Roper also reveals his cold view of Teddy, calling him useful but disposable, while insisting that only Danny Roper (Noah Jupe) is his true heir. The conversation exposes how calculated and far-reaching Roper's ambitions truly are, and how little he truly cares for Teddy. Pine may use the recording to reveal Roper's sinister plans to Teddy. The shocking audio could turn Teddy against his father, leading him to collaborate with Pine to take down Roper.
Co-director of the show, Georgi Banks-Davies, opened up about a potential third season, as per Variety. He shared, "There was a third season that was always in the offing. David is writing it now; he's at the coalface and in the early stage. But yeah, when the second season came, the plan was to go to three. So when you see our whole series, you'll see it can sit entirely alone but can also sit very much as the second book in the trilogy."
