Will Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in ‘King Richard’ but him slapping Chris Rock live on TV right overshadowed his big win of the evening and it now might have some unexpected consequences. While the Internet called to strip off his Academy Award, it is also being rumored that the 53-year-old actor might be banned from the Oscars for a year.

Will Smith might have scored Oscar nominations for his role in the upcoming film ‘Emancipation’ only if he would not have pulled such a stunt on Chris Rock. Matt Belloni of Puck News revealed on ‘Today’ show that Academy was very upset adding that there will be punishment. The ‘Wild Wild West’ star had slapped Chris Rock on Sunday, March 28 at the Oscars ceremony after the latter cracked a balding joke on the actor’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Will soon apologized saying hope the Academy would invite him back.

Will Will Smith be banned from the Oscars?

Matt Belloni on the show stated, “I think the Academy is very upset, the members I’ve spoken to are just appalled that this took place on the Oscar stage” adding, “There will be a punishment. I don’t think they will take away his Oscar … that is for [‘King Richard’], for the work he’s done.” Hinting at a year-long ban, Matt stated, “But I would not be surprised if they suspend him [from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences] for a year, six months-really give him a public lashing, so to speak, where he will feel something and not be able to get a nomination for a movie that he has coming out next year.”

Oscar-winning actor Thomas Haden Church too shed light on Will Smith’s SLAPGATE controversy saying he should be banned from Oscars for the rest of his life. In an interview with SiriusXM Volume, Church said, as reported by E! Online, “I think that Will Smith should be banned from the Oscars for the rest of his life”, adding, “I think he should have his Academy membership stripped, but I don't think he should have the Oscar taken from him."

‘Will Smith should be held accountable for his violence’

Social media users too weighed in on the issue stating, “Will Smith should be banned from appearing or attending the Oscars. He abused his privilege. I would suggest he get to keep the trophy as a reminder of need to get therapy and humility. If he would’ve been a C-list celebrity there would no controversy.” Whereas, another shared, “Will Smith should be held accountable for his violence, it is not OK to slap a person for any reason, he should lose his Oscar and be banned from further events, he would demand that action be taken of a person that would have slapped him.”

One user posted, “Will Smith should be charged with assault and battery. He should be banned from the Oscars. The woman has alopecia, not pancreatic cancer. Grow up.” And, another stated, “This isn't rocket science...unless will smith is above the law, he should be stripped of his oscar, banned for life and arrested for assault. enough of this s**t.” The next one added, “Will Smith is 100% responsible for what happened the other night and should be banned from Oscars for a year.” And, another concluded, “Will Smith should be banned from the Oscars, he is despicable! A vessel for love as he slaps Chris Rock??? He should have been arrested on the spot! He should’ve gotten an award for best actor for the crocodile tears as he’s laughing off the stage.”
