Why is K-pop girl group Gugudan disbanding? Fans slam Jellyfish Entertainment for 'wasting talent'

Jellyfish Entertainment’s K-pop girl group ‘Gugudan’ are officially disbanding as the agency confirmed the news with a formal statement. Gugudan, which debuted in 2016, last released their music in 2018. Here’s why the girl group is disbanding after four years of being together.

In an official statement, the agency said, "As of December 31, Gugudan's official group promotions will come to an end, after many years of active promotions, receiving much love from fans," and added, "We came to this settlement with all of the Gugudan members after a lengthy and serious discussion."

Why are Gugudan disbanding? 

Though officially there is no official reason for Gugudan disbandment stated by the agency yet, on December 30, Jellyfish shared a notice stating that ‘Gugudan’ will officially cease all their musical activities on December 31. Here’s what their statement read: "This is Jellyfish Entertainment. First, we would like to thank all of the fans who have sent their love and support to Gugudan. We are writing to inform you of our official position regarding the future of Gugudan’s group activities. Gugudan, who have been working hard and have been well-loved since their debut, will be ending official group activities on December 31. After a series of long and in-depth discussions between the company and the artists, we have agreed to end the group activities.”

It went on saying, "Although the group activities will be over, we will do our best to provide our full support to the members’ various personal activities, such as music and acting. Thank you again for your support for Gugudan, and we would like to sincerely apologize to Gugudan fans for the sudden news. Finally, please continue to send your love and support to the members who will be embarking on their new paths."



 

Gugudan debuted on June 28, 2016, with their EP Act. 1 The Little Mermaid. The group started off as a nine-member act with Mimi, Hana, Haebin, Nayoung, Sejeong, Sally, Soyee, Mina and Hyeyeon. Later in 2018, Hyeyeon left the group. Among them, Mina and Sejeong came from the reality show 'Produce 101'. Their last comeback was in November 2018 with the mini album 'Act. 5 New Action' and the title track 'Not That Type'.

Fans of the K-pop girl group Gugudan are devastated at the news as they slam the entertainment company for ‘wasting’ the talent of the group members. An outraged fan posted, “Look at gugudan’s talent that jellyfish decided to waste.” Another echoed the sentiment saying, “Wasting this??? BRUHHHHHH you're sick.” Another slammed the entertainment group stating, “Jellyfish is f***ing stupid.” Another fan shared a snippet of Gugudan’s music posting, “Gugudan gave us a bop but yall ignored it.....”
