LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Big networks like Fox, NBC, ABC, and many more have to make tough decisions from to time for the sake of posterity. The network executives keep a close eye on all their assets, especially the shows which make the networks a ton of money. But sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures and the networks have to do away with some shows that they never wanted to in the first place.

Fox, one of America’s biggest commercial broadcast networks, is going through a similar ordeal and has decided to pull the plug on its hit show ‘9-1-1’ while reassuring the fans that the spinoff, ‘9-1-1: Lonestar’, will continue to air on the network. For the network to take such a drastic step, something might have gone wrong as ‘9-1-1’ was Fox’s highest-rated scripted series for six seasons. But why has Fox decided to axe one of its biggest shows?

Why did Fox cancel ‘9-1-1’?

As reported by the network, the decision to discontinue ‘9-1-1’ didn’t happen overnight. After long deliberation and considering the financial burden of the show, ‘9-1-1’ had to be called off from the network. The show which aired for six seasons took almost $9-$10 million an episode to make. Its star-studded cast led by Oscar nominees Angela Bassett and Peter Krause and other important storylines which included a lot of visual effects and stunts, drained the network of a lot of money. Hence, the decision to end the show came after looking at everything.

Fox has also recently canceled another six-year TV drama, 'The Resident', which had launched alongside '9-1-1'. After canceling ‘9-1-1’, Fox came out with a statement that seemed to echo their disappointment about ending the show. “It has been an honor to be the founding network of 9-1-1 and we are grateful to Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, together with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Ryan Guzman and the rest of the cast and crew, and 20th Television for delivering such an impactful series to Fox.”

Is this the end of ‘9-1-1’?

Even though Fox has decided to cancel its highest scripted show, ‘9-1-1’ will switch networks and move to ABC. Disney, which now owns 21st Century Fox, has swooped in to save the day for all the ‘9-1-1’ fans and will continue to cater to the needs of all the loyal ‘9-1-1’ enthusiasts, although on a different network. And as for the spinoff ‘9-1-1: Lonestar,’ it will continue as it is on Fox.
