Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) has remained one of the biggest mysteries in 'House of the Dragon'. Rankin's character spent two seasons guiding Targaryens through strange visions and protecting Harrenhal's secrets. The Season 3 finale finally gave Alys a tragic history. Her tale tied her directly into the destruction of Harrenhal when Aegon the Conqueror conquered the castle. Alys told Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) about her history during an emotional discussion.

She took him back to the time when Harren the Black ruled the Riverlands. Harren believed Harrenhal could protect him from Aegon's army. He was wrong. Aegon's dragon, Balerion the Black Dread, attacked the castle and burned Harren and his sons alive. Alys revealed that one boy survived the attack. The baby boy had been severely burned, and his mother did everything to help him survive. She brought in maesters from all over Westeros, but none of their treatments helped.

She then turned to older forms of healing. She used magic, spells, and strange remedies involving things found in the forest. None of them saved her son, as the boy eventually died. His mother then discovered that her attempts at magic had left her cursed. She could not die and became bound to the lands once controlled by the River Kings. That woman was Alys Rivers. Alys never directly said she was Harren the Black's wife. She revealed that she lost her title, name, and castle. This information tells us that she must have come from a noble family within the castle. This information gives fans greater insight into why she is so interested in controlling the castle since she believes it will restore the life she lost years ago.

This is one reason why she seeks to take control of Harrenhal from Daemon Targaryen. Aegon I destroyed her home and family. His conquest pushed her toward magic, which eventually trapped her at Harrenhal. The Season 3 finale's story is not found in 'Fire & Blood'. George R.R. Martin's book gives Alys a much smaller history. It describes her as a wet nurse with supposed magical abilities and suggests that she was a bastard of Lord Lyonel Strong.

The book never connects her directly to Harren the Black. It does not mention a wife who survived Harrenhal's destruction or a son who lived through Balerion's attack. 'Fire & Blood' mentions another possible survivor of Harren's line. A rebel named Harren the Red claims to be Harren the Black's grandson. The book never confirms whether that claim is true. That detail leaves some room for the show's new story. 'HOTD' uses the gaps in Martin's history to create a deeper connection between Alys and Harrenhal. So, who is Alys Rivers? In the TV series, she is an ancient woman connected with Harrenhal through magic. The creators of the show are 'responsible' for the sad past; it does not come from 'Fire & Blood'.
