Who is Mor Ilderton? 'American Idol' singer honors late mother and gets a surprise he'll never forget
The stage of 'American Idol' Season 24 was lit up with a heartfelt performance from 22-year-old singer Mor Ilderton. The young singer captivated judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood with an original song dedicated to his late mother. The performance grew even more emotional when Ilderton received a surprise visit from his grandmother, creating a truly memorable 'American Idol' moment.
Before performing his song, 'Strong,' Ilderton, a gas utility worker, explained to judges why he chose the acoustic ballad. "I lost my biological mom when I was two years old. My dad ended my mom's life," as the room fell silent. About the song, he added, "It's about seeing my mom's picture for the first time and not knowing her and just kind of looking at a stranger and just pouring out my emotions of that through this song."
The Teays Valley, West Virginia, native also shared that he was raised by his grandmother, Sandy, after his mother passed away. "Since I was two years old, I was put into full custody with my grandma, and I grew up calling her Mom," he said, while adding, "She is an amazing woman. I mean, I was a mischievous kid. I put her through so much. Whoever I am, I reach back to her always." Ilderton delivered his original song with heartfelt emotion, despite stumbling at the start and asking to restart.
Once composed, his stellar performance moved the judges. Underwood praised him, saying, "I feel like you went somewhere else when you were singing. It's like we weren't here, but in a good way." Richie added, "As unnerved as you may feel, I love your delivery. I love the timbre of your voice, and more importantly, that writing was very cool. I mean that." Bryan told him, "You've got all the tools. You've got the look… "You've got the heart, the voice."
Unbeknownst to Mor, his grandmother, Sandy, had flown in to support him and was hiding behind the stage. Once Underwood encouraged her, she came out, and Ilderton hugged her, amazed since she hadn't been on a plane in 25 years. Ilderton quickly earned three yeses from the judges. Afterward, Richie remarked, "The tragedy of all that story is to have Nana, Sandy, and the family around him; he's going to be alright."
Notably, this is not Ilderton's first stint in a music competition, as the singer previously competed on 'The Voice' Season 26 in 2024, initially joining Michael Bublé's team during the Blind Auditions. After losing in the Battle Rounds, he was stolen by Gwen Stefani to remain in the competition. However, Mor left the show before the Knockout Rounds. Stefani confirmed that he 'had to go home,' though no further explanation was given. Since then, Mor has focused on releasing original songs and pursuing his music career independently.
