Teen ‘American Idol’ singer leaves judges in tears as she honors Mississippi student lost to cyberbullying
‘American Idol’ Season 24 premiere saved its final audition for a 15-year-old singer, Khloe Grace. She walked into the room carrying more than nerves and a microphone. By the time she finished, the judges, the audience, and pretty much anyone watching from home knew they had just witnessed the moment that would define the episode. Grace closed out the night with an original song titled ‘Forever 13’. And before she even sang a word, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a typical audition. The song was written in memory of Aubreigh Wyatt, a 13-year-old girl who was cyberbullied and later died by suicide.
Grace didn’t know Wyatt personally, nor did she grow up with her. Their lives didn’t cross in real time. But the story found her anyway. Also, Aubreigh’s mother, Heather, was in the room for the audition, as reported by TVLine. The two had never met before that day. There was no connection between them. Just a shared purpose and a moment that felt carefully held together. Wyatt died on September 4, 2023, while she was an eighth-grade student at a middle school in Mississippi, as per Just Jared. According to her obituary, she was remembered as “a straight-A student, an amazing daughter, sister, and friend.”
"She was a kid who loved the beach, gymnastics, riding four-wheelers, hanging out with friends, and making TikToks. Wyatt was well known and loved in the community, especially for her outgoing and bubbly personality.” Standing under the ‘Idol’ lights, Grace explained that she wrote ‘Forever 13’ after learning about Wyatt's story and feeling compelled to respond in the only way she knew how. And on Facebook, Khloe posted, “Her story really touched me, and I hope this song helps others facing the same thing Aubreigh did.”
Then she started singing. The lyrics cut straight through the room. Some of the lines are particularly touching, such as “She had her whole life ahead of her, and you watched her drift away,” and “A young girl had to lose her life so that you could feel somewhat satisfied.” By the time Grace reached the end of the song, the judges looked stunned. It wasn’t just about her singing talent, although that was obvious. It was about the power of the lyrics, the message behind them, and the bravery it took for a teenager to get up on one of the largest television stages and share a message like that.
Carrie Underwood, who has seen her share of emotional auditions over the years, struggled to keep it together. She broke down into full sobs and had trouble finishing her thoughts. She was visibly shaken by what she had heard. Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie were feeling the same way. As the judges took a moment to steady themselves, it became clear this was a performance none of them would forget. The decision that followed was unanimous, an easy yes from every judge.
