'Supernatural' and 4 other shows and movies to watch in honor of Carrie Anne Fleming's death at 51
Carrie Anne Fleming, known for her eerie screen presence and a career that spanned cult favorites and mainstream hits, died on February 26 in Sidney, British Columbia. She was 51 years old at the time of her death, and her passing was confirmed by Jim Beaver, her co-star from ‘Supernatural’. He shared with Variety that she died after complications related to breast cancer. Fleming is survived by her daughter, Madalyn Rose, also known as Max, and plans for a memorial service are expected to be shared at a later time. So if you’re looking to revisit her work, here are five projects that capture different sides of her talent.
1) Supernatural
For many fans, this is where they first recognized her. ‘Supernatural’, created by Eric Kripke, followed brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) as they chased down creatures that most people pretend don’t exist. Fleming stepped into this world as Karen Singer, the wife of Bobby Singer, portrayed by Jim Beaver. Her role wasn’t constant, but it didn’t need to be. She added emotional weight to Beaver’s backstory as her death was the main reason why he went into hunting.
2) Masters of Horror
If there was ever a role that proved Fleming could go all in, it was her appearance in ‘Masters of Horror’, the anthology series created by Mick Garris. The show leaned into unsettling stories, and her episode, titled ‘Jenifer’, did not hold back. She portrayed an alarming character with cannibalistic tendencies, who was disfigured, unpredictable, and disturbingly human at the same time. It wasn’t an easy role to watch, and probably not an easy one to play either. But she committed fully with no hesitation. Her performance was remembered long after the credits rolled.
3) iZombie
On the CW’s ‘iZombie’, Fleming showed a completely different side. The series, led by Rose McIver as Liv Moore, was all about crime-solving with a supernatural twist. It followed a medical examiner who gained memories from the brains she consumed. Fleming played Candy Baker, a recurring character across five seasons, and had a complicated relationship with Blaine.
4) Happy Gilmore
Long before streaming shows dominated everything, Fleming appeared in the sports comedy ‘Happy Gilmore’, starring Adam Sandler. The film followed a hot-headed hockey player trying to make it big in golf. Fleming played Donna, a smaller role in the grand scheme of things, but still part of a movie that became a cult favorite over time. It’s one of those appearances that feels like a hidden gem when you go back and rewatch it.
5) Good Luck Chuck
Then there’s ‘Good Luck Chuck’, a romantic comedy with a slightly offbeat premise. The story centers on a dentist, played by Dane Cook, who becomes convinced that every woman he dates goes on to find true love with someone else. Enter Jessica Alba as the one he hopes will break the pattern. Fleming’s role as Dirty Talker in the film was brief but bold.
