Want to watch ‘Hamnet’? Here’s your guide as Steven Spielberg drama wins Best Picture at 2026 Golden Globes
With much fanfare and acclaim, Steven Spielberg's 'Hamnet' won Best Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes 2026. The biographical drama is based on Maggie O'Farrell's novel of the same name, which centers around the impact of the death of William Shakespeare's 11-year-old son, Hamnet. Praised for its compelling narrative and standout performances, the film holds an 86% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following its major Golden Globes win, many viewers are now wondering how they can watch the film.
Reportedly, 'Hamnet' is currently only playing in theaters, with streaming expected later in 2026 on Peacock and Prime Video, as per Elle. After winning the prestigious award, the producer of the movie, Spielberg, thanked the Golden Globes voters, while he added, "Sam Mendes, who sent me the book by Maggie O’Farrell, Hamnet, and I love the book, but I felt there was really only one filmmaker on the face of the planet who could tell the story of Agnes and Will and the spirits of the earth and the forest, and that was the exceptional, exceptional, exceptional Chloe Zhao," as per The Hollywood Reporter.
After losing Best Director to Paul Thomas Anderson, Zhao addressed the audience by sharing a message Paul Mescal had given her earlier that day, "He said that making Hamnet made him realise that the most important thing of being an artist is learning to be vulnerable enough to allow ourselves to be seen for who we are now, who we ought to be, and to give ourselves wholly to the world, even the parts of ourselves that we're ashamed of, that we're afraid of, that are imperfect, so the people that we speak to, they can also learn to see themselves and fully accept themselves."
She then praised her fellow nominees, adding, "I see so many of you have became so strong and tender at the same time, and you have shared so much of yourselves in your work to the world, so I salute to your bravery, and I salute your dedication. And let's do this together. Let's keep our hearts open, and let's keep seeing each other, and let's keep allowing ourselves to be seen." Notably, 'Hamnet' competed against 'Frankenstein' and 'It Was Just an Accident.'
Not only that, 'Hamnet' star Jessie Buckley also won the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama and in her acceptance speech, she thanked the Golden Globes, the film's supporters, and notably the "400 extras" who helped bring the film to life, saying, "This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in, but thank you Golden Globes, thank you Focus [Features] and everybody who supported this film. Chloe, Paul, Maggie, Max, Emily, Jacobi, Joe, the 400 extras, I adore you. I would rave in that globe for the rest of my life with you," as per The Hollywood Reporter.
She also talked about the film's unique international collaboration, adding, "It was such an extraordinary set to be part of because we were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived, and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish and mostly Polish crew."
