'True Detective' Season 5 drops major release update, eyes Nicolas Cage to lead bone-chilling crime drama
After four gripping and spine-chilling installments, the HBO crime series, 'True Detective,' now in the works, has a string of updates. The latest on the anthology drama is a pencilled 2027 release date. Eyed is Nicolas Cage's services as season 4 showrunner Issa López returns to direct the fifth season. This time, 'True Detective' is set in New York, as confirmed by HBO’s head of drama series, Francesca Orsi.
In an interview with Deadline, "Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful," the executive said when asked about the developments for Season 5. Further adding to the confirmation was HBO and HBO Max content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys. "We’re still working with Issa on the story, which she does have set in New York, but no updates on it," Bloys said. "She’s working on the script." Filming is set to go on floors later this year. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson headlined the first installment of True Detective, with Colin Farrell and Mahershala Ali were the leads of Season 2 and Season 3, respectively. Jodie Foster starred in the previous season.
At the time of writing, Cage is one of the names being looked at to star in the series. Per the outlet, "Cage is in talks for the lead role of Henry Logan, a New York detective on the case at the center of the new season, sources said. A rep for HBO declined comment." While there is no official plotline available, López believed there would be a connection with the fourth season. "There’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season]. "That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything," she added, but promised, “There’s a little bit of joy for the fans of Night Country."
