'The Rip' trailer: Loyalties fray in slick crime thriller ft. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are Miami cops in 'The Rip', and the latest trailer sees the two Hollywood heavyweights reunite in Netflix's crime thriller. Set to premiere on the streamer on January 16, 'The Rip' stars Affleck and Damon as Detective Sergeant JD Byrne and Lieutenant Dane Dumars, respectively. The story is inspired by true events.
According to Netflix, the official logline reads, "The Rip follows a team of Miami cops who have discovered millions in cash in a derelict stash house. Soon, the trust between them begins to erode, especially once outside forces learn about the size of the seizure. Everything is called into question — including who they can rely on."
Earlier, writer and director Jor Carnahan spoke about the making of the film. "I’ve always been a big fan of the cop film," Carnahan told Tudum. "It’s an extension of that genre, with a real-life component, a very emotional core, and a key question that gets posed throughout the film: Are we the good guys?"
He also weighed in on Affleck and Damon's chemistry. "You talk about the meta of something. You’ve got these two guys who have both been world-famous for over 30 years with a wonderful sense of friendship and brotherhood … Those guys are just so gifted and lovely and talented and open."
Also starring are Steven Yeun as Detective Mike Ro, Teyana Taylor as Detective Numa Baptiste, Sasha Calle as Desi, Catalina Sandino Moreno as Detective Lolo Salazar, Scott Adkins, Kyle Chandler as DEA Agent Mateo ‘Matty’ Nix, Néstor Carbonell, and Lina Esco as Jackie Velez.
"It doesn't feel like a bunch of actors just showed up five minutes before,” Carnahan explained. “The bonding and spending time and people really, genuinely liking each other gave it this great feeling that is hard to capture. But when you get it, you're so fortunate. All the performances are wonderful. It's a testament to what happens when you get a bunch of talented people together, you give them something that they could relate to and latch onto, and the results speak for themselves."
'The Rip' is one of the first of Damon's projects for 2026, as he is also set to play the lead in Christopher Nolan's much-awaited epic, 'The Odyssey', which will be arriving in theaters on July 17. Affleck is currently starring in and directing his next feature titled 'Animals'.
'The Rip' arrives on Netflix January 16.
