'Legally Blonde' prequel 'Elle' gets early season 2 renewal as Prime Video reveals release date
When it was first announced that the 'Legally Blonde' movies would be adapted into 'Elle', a series for Prime Video, the news generated instant buzz. Created by Laura Kittrell, the comedy series will follow Elle Woods' high school years, the iconic character originally played by Reese Witherspoon. With newcomer Lexi Minetree set to step into Witherspoon's shoes, excitement reached an all-time high. Adding to the buzz, the makers recently revealed the much-anticipated show's release date and confirmed that there will be a season 2.
Prime Video announced that 'Elle' will premiere on Wednesday, July 1, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Witherspoon described the upcoming series as "a dream come true," saying it's special to revisit the character "twenty-five years after the world met Elle Woods for the first time." She also praised Minetree, calling the process of "discovering Lexi Minetree and watching her step into Elle's fabulous shoes" one of the most rewarding moments of her career.
Witherspoon added that the show's core messages of "kindness, authenticity, and believing in yourself" will strongly connect with fans of the original films as well as new viewers. She said, "Working with our incredible Hello Sunshine team, Amazon, and our visionary writers and directors to bring Elle's high school journey to life has been a tremendous joy. I can't wait to share season one with the world and start rolling cameras on season two."
Peter Friedlander, global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, said Elle "captures the heart, confidence, and optimism" that made Elle Woods a cultural icon while offering a fresh coming-of-age story. He added, "Ordering a second season speaks to our belief in the creative vision and the incredible team behind the series, and we're excited for audiences to experience Elle's journey starting with season one."
Notably, Hello Sunshine and Prime Video announced that the series wrapped production on August 8, 2025. Kittrell also executive-produced alongside Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and 'Legally Blonde' franchise producer Marc Platt. Produced by Hello Sunshine and Amazon MGM Studios, the series features Jason Moore directing the first two episodes, as per Deadline.
Reportedly, Mintree bagged the highly coveted character after she beat Madison Wolf for the lead role and was personally welcomed by Witherspoon. The show also stars June Diane Raphael as her mother, Eva, and Tom Everett Scott as her father, Wyatt, alongside a supporting cast that includes Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, Jessica Belkin, Logan Shroyer, and Amy Pietz. As per Variety, the 'Legally Blonde' franchise began with the 2001 box office hit, followed by a 2003 sequel, 'Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde', a 2009 direct-to-video third film produced by Witherspoon, though she did not star in it, and a 2007 Broadway musical that earned multiple Tony and Drama Desk nominations.
