Charlize Theron escapes a serial killer in chilling trailer for Netflix's upcoming thriller ‘Apex’
Netflix recently dropped the first trailer of its upcoming survivalist thriller film 'Apex'. Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana rstar in the film, which is being directed by Baltasar Kormákur. Combining elements of high-octane action drama coupled with a relentless battle against the elements of nature, Theron opens the trailer by exploring through the woods as someone who is dealing with past trauma. However, Theron's peace is soon cut short as Egerton's arrival causes her to run for her life, taking up her chances of survival in an otherwise unforgiving environment, as reported by Collider.
Filming for the upcoming movie kicked off earlier this year in February, with the release date on the streaming platform set for April 24, 2026. Both Theron and Egerton have made their bones with action-adventure productions in the past, viz. 'Kingsman: The Secret Service,' 'The Old Guard' and 'Carry-On'. Kormákur is known for the 2015 biographical survival film 'Everest' and the 2018 romance adventure flick 'Adrift'.
Speaking with Tudum at the time of the filming of 'Apex', the Icelandic director had expressed his excitment, "I couldn’t be more excited, working in the rugged, beautiful terrains of Australia with three of the world’s most talented, dedicated actors in Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana is such a joy — even as I put them through the (ringer) in this unique survivor story.”
The official Netflix synopsis describes the film as, "A grieving woman seeks solace in the wilderness only to become ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a serial killer." Kormákur has seemingly perfected the art of presenting locations and backdrops as a key narrative element in his films, and his search for rugged terrain and wilderness for 'Apex' landed him in Australia's New South Wales, which is the home of the Blue Mountains. "For a film like Apex — where the elements and the terrain are characters that loom just as large as the movie stars battling in it — no other country in the world could have taken the place of Australia as our primary location," Kormákur further added, as per Variety.
It is needless to say that filming for such a film is complete without the support of the local administration, and Kormákur didn't fall behind in expressing his gratitude when he remarked, "The unrivaled landscape, studio facilities, and talented crews in New South Wales have been a boon to this production. I want to thank the people of NSW, the NSW government, and the Australian Government’s Location Offset for all the support we’ve received in making this journey possible.” 'Apex' is produced by Chernin Entertainment, represented by David Ready, Peter Chernin, and Jenno Topping, along with Ian Bryce Productions. Theron herself co-produces under the banner of Secret Menu, in addition to Kormákur's RVK Studios.
