If you grew up on ‘Goosebumps,’ RL Stine’s chilling next project might totally surprise you
With its amalgamation of humor and horror, the 'Goosebumps' franchise is considered one of the best family-friendly horror series made in Hollywood. Based on the popular book series by RL Stine, the first 'Goosebumps' movie was released in 2015, followed by 'Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween' in 2018. While there has been no official chatter about a third film in the popular franchise, Stine is all set to return to horror with his most chilling book series yet, and we are hooked.
Stine is officially returning to Boom! Studios' comic series 'Stuff of Nightmares' in 2026, as reported by Popverse. The adult horror series, which originally launched in 2022 with artist AL Kaplan and colorist Roman Titov, previously ran for six volumes. Speaking to Popverse, Stine explained that the revival took shape after meetings at Comic-Con, saying, "I just met some people at Comic-Con in San Diego and just thought they were really nice. We've been doing comics together. I've been doing adult horror, sort of going back to my past. I'm actually going to do a couple more next year, called 'Stuff of Nightmares'. The old-fashioned adult horror."
Although best known for children's horror, Stine's move into adult horror comics has been well-received. Reportedly, 'Stuff of Nightmares' earned strong praise for its dark tone and artwork, with Volume #1 holding an average 4.7 rating on Amazon. Its success is being further cemented by Boom! Studios releasing six trade volumes, including a special “Stuff of Nightmares: Christmas” edition, as per ScreenRant.
Notably, 'Stuff of Nightmares' is far from Stine's first experience in the world of comics or adult-oriented storytelling. Long before the Boom! Studios series, Stine made his mark in comics by collaborating with Marvel on a 'Man-Thing' series in 2017 and contributing to 'GI Joe' comics in the late 1980s. His willingness to explore darker material also extends beyond comics, as Stine published his first adult novel, 'Superstitious,' in 1995, marking a clear shift from the kid-friendly scares that made 'Goosebumps' a household name.
Since then, Stine has continued to return to more mature horror projects alongside his work for younger audiences, showing a consistent interest in unsettling, old-school scares. That long-running creative balance helps explain why 'Stuff of Nightmares' resonated so strongly with readers and why its return in 2026 has generated excitement.
