‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ trailer shows Thomas Shelby battling his own blood in war-torn England
All isn't well in the Shelby family, and that takes center stage in the new trailer of 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man'. Netflix released the official trailer earlier today, and the full-length clip pits Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) against his now-grown-up illegitimate son, Duke (Barry Keoghan), who is now running the Peaky Blinders gang.
"Your gypsy son is running Peaky Blinders like it’s 1919 all over again," Ada Shelby (played by Sophie Rundle) laments to Thomas in the trailer. The clip also shows the Peaky Blinders showing no mercy as they wreak havoc in England, a country in complete disorder during World War II. The chaos forces Thomas to return to his violent past and confront Duke. Also starring is Tim Roth as a British fascist sympathizer who supports his son, Duke.
What is well documented from the series is Shelby's hate for the fascists. The final seasons of the show saw him work to bring down the British Union of Fascists from within. However, with the film set against the backdrop of the war, we will see him return from exile to put an end to his son's actions after he chooses his side.
Returning cast members alongside Murphy and Rundle include Stephen Graham and Ned Dennehy as Hayden Stagg and Charlie Strong. New faces in the film include Rebecca Ferguson and Jay Lycurgo. 'The Immortal Man' is helmed by Tom Harper, who has directed several episodes of the show. Following its BBC premiere in 2013, 'Peaky Blinders' ended after six seasons. Netflix bagged the US rights, and the streamer picked up a sequel series with Murphy on board as an executive producer. The sequel will be set after the events of the film.
"After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel,” the official synopsis reads. "In a new era of Steven Knight’s ‘Peaky Blinders,’ the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart."
Per Tudum, Murphy teased his character in the film. "Once, I nearly got f****in’ everything. But nearly doesn’t count." He further added, "When we meet him, he’s as broken as he has been. He’s just medicating and living in this purgatory that he’s created for himself in this big old house. He’s in this liminal space, not really living, he’s not really dead. He’s ignoring the world, he’s ignoring his family."
Series creator Steven Knight also shed light on Ferguson's character, which had been shrouded in mystery during production. He revealed she would be playing a new character, Kaulo. "I wanted her to reflect the tradition of powerful female characters and the fact that Peaky has always been a bit supernatural," he told EW. "I wanted the idea of destiny and fate, and is it fate or is it your own choice and free will and all that. She's just such a great actor." 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' releases on Netflix on March 20, while the film is also set for a theatrical release in select cinemas on March 6.
