Matt Damon and Ben Affleck share screenspace in Netflix's latest cop drama, 'The Rip'. Directed by Joe Carnahan, the movie centers on a Miami narcotics team as they discover over $20m during a 'rip' that threatens to fracture the team with betrayal and conflict. The actioner was released on January 16 on Netflix.

According to Netflix, the official logline reads, "The Rip follows a team of Miami cops who have discovered millions in cash in a derelict stash house. Soon, the trust between them begins to erode, especially once outside forces learn about the size of the seizure. Everything is called into question — including who they can rely on."

Also starring are Steven Yeun as Detective Mike Ro, Teyana Taylor as Detective Numa Baptiste, Sasha Calle as Desi, Catalina Sandino Moreno as Detective Lolo Salazar, Scott Adkins, Kyle Chandler as DEA Agent Mateo ‘Matty’ Nix, Néstor Carbonell, and Lina Esco as Jackie Velez.

Earlier, writer and director Carnahan spoke about the making of the film. "I’ve always been a big fan of the cop film," Carnahan told Tudum. "It’s an extension of that genre, with a real-life component, a very emotional core, and a key question that gets posed throughout the film: Are we the good guys?"

He also weighed in on Affleck and Damon's chemistry. "You talk about the meta of something. You’ve got these two guys who have both been world-famous for over 30 years with a wonderful sense of friendship and brotherhood … Those guys are just so gifted and lovely and talented and open."

Carnahan also shed light on directing his favorite genre. "The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami-Dade police department,” Carnahan explains. “It's inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ‘70's cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era — films like Serpico and Prince of the City and more recently, Michael Mann's Heat."

'The Rip' is one of the first of Damon's projects for 2026, as he is also set to play the lead in Christopher Nolan's much-awaited epic, 'The Odyssey', which will be arriving in theaters on July 17. Affleck is currently starring in and directing his next feature titled 'Animals'.

'The Rip' is streaming on Netflix.
