Antony Starr moves on from Homelander with new Netflix drama about a surfer leader with a dark edge
It's nearly impossible to separate Anthony Starr from his iconic portrayal of Homelander in 'The Boys'. With his unpredictability and stark contrast to traditional superheroes, the character has firmly cemented his place in fans' hearts. As the fan-favorite series prepares to wrap up with its fifth and final season, Starr is set to shed his notorious villainous persona and take on a brand-new character in an upcoming Netflix project.
Starr has lined up his next TV role in Netflix's newly greenlit series 'Breakers'. Starr will star as Brando, the charismatic and enigmatic leader of a surfer community, as per ScreenRant. Along with starring as 'Brando', Starr is also executive producing 'Breakers', which is currently filming in Western Australia under the direction of Mary Nighy and Ng Choon Ping, with Pete Jackson as writer and executive producer. The Netflix series has already made history as the platform's first production filmed in Western Australia, with filming expected to wrap in June.
Although 'Breakers' is Starr's first TV role after 'The Boys', he also has other projects lined up, including the biopic 'Samo Lives', where he portrays Andy Warhol opposite Kelvin Harrison Jr's Jean-Michel Basquiat. Early details suggest his 'Breakers' character, Brando, may echo shades of 'Homelander', who is also charismatic on the surface with a darker edge, which will give 'The Boys' fans a strong reason to check out the Netflix series. Meanwhile, 'The Boys' Season 5 is set to premiere on Wednesday, April 8, on Prime Video, with the first two episodes releasing together and the remaining episodes dropping weekly through May 20.
The announcement came with a new trailer teasing Jared Padalecki's mystery role and a Supernatural reunion with Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy. Fans have awaited the update since filming wrapped in July 2025, after which cast members reflected on their journey. Starr shared about his time as Homelander in the show, writing on Instagram, "I love this show. And I love this character. Truly. I will dearly miss heading to work, knowing what we were aiming for but never knowing where we would find ourselves by the end of the day…only that we would have fun and it would be creatively rewarding in the extreme," as per RadioTimes.
He expressed gratitude to creator Eric Kripke, saying, "We created a monster, sir. And I will miss him and you. Till we roll out the last season. When I'll see you. But this creative chapter is closed, and I'll miss it, brother." Starr also thanked fans, adding, "You are the lifeblood. Without you, we don't get to do this… Okidoke, people. We cooked for the last time. Can’t wait to show you what we made. Until that day, Homelander, signing off."
