Jack Ryan star Wendell Pierce praised for calm handling of deranged woman at his Death of a Salesman play
HUDSON, NEW YORK: 'Jack Ryan' star Wendell Pierce was praised online for calmly handling a deranged woman at 'Death of a Salesman' play on December 28 in Hudson, New York. The reason behind the unknown woman's bizarre outburst is still unknown. One social media user named Mike Rubin explained the whole situation on Instagram saying, “That Wendell Pierce is one of the great actors of his generation should hardly be a secret. But tonight, in the middle of his electrifying performance as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s DEATH OF A SALESMAN, he was forced to break character when an irate, seemingly inebriated audience member disrupted the play’s second act so intensely that the action had to be suspended.”
“When the house lights came up, he patiently & heroically pleaded with her to leave peacefully despite her insistence that she should be carried out forcefully (she was eventually escorted out by police). After the play resumed, Pierce segued seamlessly back into the role of a lifetime — his first appearance on Broadway in three decades — an acting job all the more remarkable given the real-life drama that could have derailed the entire night,” the user added.

Another user named Holly Lincoln who was reportedly also present during the event wrote in the comment section, “My husband and I were in the dress circle for this performance. I was so impressed with how Mr. Pierce and the entire cast handled the disruption. The show was fantastic and the unfortunate (and bizarre) disruption was just a blip. Theater security and the police did their jobs well, although it took several minutes to remove the woman. Mr. Pierce especially showed such class, patience, humor, and humanity — I’m an even bigger fan now!”
Wendell Pierce, 58, is an actor and activist best known for his roles in the HBO dramas 'The Wire' and 'Treme,' and most recently in Amazon Prime Video's 'Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan.' A video posted on Twitter showed the heated exchange between the said woman and Wendell Pierce. A Twitter user named Chris Colligan wrote, “The woman in question was seated in the front row, just a few seats from us, & during the 1st act was talking loudly, seemingly intoxicated. When ushers intervened at intermission, it became a public spectacle during Act 2, interrupting the show.”

Another Reddit user also explained, saying, “I was there, 4 seats away from the lady. She was seated with her husband front row center. During act 1 she was constantly going through her bag loudly and yelling responses to what the actors were saying. She was very obviously drunk and/or high. During intermission, her husband tried to get her to leave. They made their way to the back of the theatre as act 2 was starting then a little while later she starts screaming at the top of her lungs that she wasn't leaving and if she couldn't see the rest of the show neither would anyone else.”
“She made her way back to the front of the stage, still screaming when the show was stopped and house lights were brought up. Wendell Pierce tried to reason with her but she didn't buy it. The husband kept demanding their money back. Pierce told the usher to grab money from petty cash to pay them, but around then the cops came. I wish they would have dragged her out but they reasoned with her and she left with her husband. They then restarted the scene from the top,” the user added.
