Spoiler warning for 'Watchmen' episode 8.

Move over, Audrey Niffenegger, because HBO brings the ultimate story of a romance across a broken timeline - at least as far as the fans are concerned. While the episode contained a lot of story that changes what we know about the events of the series, the takeaway for the fans was of just how heartbreaking the tale of Doctor Manhattan is, was, and ultimately, will be.

The past few weeks have seen 'Watchmen' continually outdoing itself, as each episode has been what fans have claimed to be "the best episode yet!" This week continues that upward trend, with the complicated time-traveling perspective of Doctor Manhattan (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) boggling minds and breaking hearts. "I don’t know if that episode of the #Watchmen did a better job of blowing my mind or crushing my heart. Amazing," tweeted a fan. Some fans seemed to take the episode as one of the definitive Doctor Manhattan stories, tying his beginnings in Germany into his final moments with Angela. "“Don’t all relationships end in tragedy?” - The Watchmen. What a finale. Best acting and storytelling ever. Heart is exploding," said a fan, though it should be noted that Doctor Manhattan's story isn't over...yet.

The episode appeared to really hit home for the fans, with its focus on the love story between Angela Abar (Regina King) and Doctor Manhattan. "I did not expect to be a tear-stained weepy emotional wreck of a human after tonight's episode," said another user on Twitter. Doctor Manhattan has been given a humanizing aspect, and for a character who struggles to connect with humanity, the episode has certainly done a strong job of striking up a connection with the fans. "Dear Santa, I would like a man like #drmanhattan for Xmas or even Dr. Manhattan himself. I will even cosplay as Angela to make it feel more at home for him," a fan declared online.

The next episode of 'Watchmen' airs December 15, on HBO
